Hey guys, just saying I think I'm going to leave computer engineering college.. I don't like programming all day long. I've chosen this college for starting freelance programming and because I still love tecnology/ethical hacking etc, but I'm bit upset now.. I finally found what I really like to do: selling and marketing/web marketing.
So, I'm planning to change college to get a degree in economics and management and maybe do something like an MBA course some day..or start some work atm. This is my dream now, and maybe one day I'd run my own web-marketing startup and be financially independent.

Could you share here your IT or Marketing college/ works experiences here? Who of you is working in the IT field like marketing manager? I don't see anyone working in IT marketing where I live now..most people working in IT field are working like slaves in companies.. I don't know, maybe in America this kind of work is different and well paid..

I'm two subjects away from completing a bachelors degree in ICT and a minor in marketing and I am so happy I never left. College isn't going to teach you everything you'll ever need to know, but it will teach you how to learn and there is no better skill than that.

ICT degrees are not about programming all day. In my degree we did 2 x software development subjects, 2 x database subjects and 1 x enterprise architecture subject. These are the only ones that I have written code in. The rest of the time its about high level theories such as Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Allot of people think this is just bullshit academic crap, but you'll find those same people never learnt it. Its fine to learn how to write HTML if you want to run a small business, but I can guarantee those people that run big companies and make shit loads of cash put these high level theories into practice every day.

My life is my life, and I decided not to work for anyone except myself.

This one life, is to short spending days (that days you can not buy or get them again, they are spent) in some small office.

Do what you have to do, fuck parents, fuck friends, fuck girls.

Make money. Money is power, you can say it's not, it's love that is important.

MONEY IS POWER OF 21 CENTURY.

Live your life, in 40 years you will be too old for everything.

Yeah practice is what I want to do to start making my own money, computer engineering has lot of theories and I don't like it anymore. I really love now Selling and Web/Marketing I'd work like making e-commerce websites, increase sales, ROI etc this is What I really like now and I think getting a degree in Economics is better to have the basic knowledge in this field and run a business/start up

Why a degree in economics when you have chosen your field to be marketing? I would suggest an MBA in marketing or Management in Information Systems.

Wouldn't you be better off doing marketing?

Universities are often backwards in the way people are employed. They think people still go work at Ford for 50 years then retire, where in reality more and more people are doing exactly what you want to do. Therefore an economics degree is likely to focus on macro economics. Even an accounting degree would be more relevant. Also, if you don't like ICT theory, what makes you think you'll like economics theory?

Where I live (Europe) to get an MBA, I need to get a basic degree in Economics, or better I may go to London to study to get the MBA. I need to make my choises. Or I could switch from Computer Engineering to Management Engineering but I don't like lots of theories to study anymore like in Physics, Chemistry etc .. Sorry guys maybe I'm bit confused, I need to focus only on one target.

Ok, College costs money, you're right but If I don't like programming anymore all day long what can I do? I'd prefer to switch to something related to marketing field.

To me it would depend on how much time you have invested in your current degree.

If you only have 6 months left, then finish it.
If you have only just started, then make the change.

Where I live there isn't anything related to marketing, you need to get a basic degree in Economics (after you can do MBA or a master like Marketing+informatics), or you need to leave college to build your own experiences... Sorry to say but I live in Italy now and this country has become poor, most people here (about 60%) want to go out Italy and build up a new life.. So, I'd like to study what I really want to do and move on from that corrupted country..

I've started last year in computer engineering, so I'd have left about two years, I can still make a change.

Before I comment I have to say that I am still in College (marketing/business) and I will get my degree next year. I am already owning an online business that generates me a good income so technically I wouldn't need college.

    Now my opinion on this:

In this business (IM) you will not need any degree and it will not help you at all. The reason for this is that in college you will never learn the things that are necessary to success in IM. Most professors don't even know that the kind of stuff we are doing here even exists. Of course you can come and say "but you can learn things like programming, creating websites etc. in college". But guys let's be honest. You don't have to pay like $15k a semester to do that. You can learn that for free and much faster online.

All in all I can say that college nowadays is only important for people who want to work in a field where they need a license to do something. For example Doctors or lawyers. But for normal businesses that don't require a degree to start them it is basically useless and actually it is a waste of time.

Honestly if I calculate how much time I have spent on college stuff and if I put this time into my business I would probably make 30-50% more money already.

I got a degree in I.T and have been working in the field for almost 2 decades and I tell you now I wish I had done something else. I love technology, which is why I chose this career, but working with it and other peoples problems has ruined my passion for it.

You don't want to ask yourself "What if?". Follow your heart! :)

The final choice is ultimately yours but just be aware: You will pick up marketing/selling skills anytime. In fact, you might be already good at it. But you might actually never learn those technical skills ever. And these skills are quite important as they teach you how to think. Your method of approaching and solving problems will be different.

A lot of people that build and run internet businesses are actually engineers to begin with. Marketing skills can be easily built on that.

I know how you are feeling there as I faced the same thing 3 years back and I am glad I never left or changed courses. What you are learning in the first year is definitely not what you will be doing the following years. You will be using your programming skills to be solving much more interesting problems. It is important that you know those basics well. Thats why they teach it.

You're right man, engineering can give you good solving skills, but problem is I don't like to program all day long. I'd do something more different like I said first marketing/web marketing/MBA-business.. I hope these kind of solving skills can be learned in other ways. I'd prefer to buy on Amazon some good books about problem skills solving and read something about it just to know some basics.
