You let people sign up and comment ?

If not - remove the registration page.

301 the registration page to a circular reference sequenced set of short urls services ....

registration page ----> 301 to a bitly url #1 ----- goes to a google shortned url --- which goes to another URL shortner service which goes back to bitly url #1

In which case they dissapear so far up their own arseholes they aint never coming down.....:p

OP do you have askimet plugin installed? Good bit of kit and will filter out 99% of the comment spam.

Look for a good captcha for your registration page and monitor, something will cut it right down. The risk you run of editing your htaccess is once you start adding ip's you will be forever doing it.

    thanks for the reply,

Yes I have installed askimet. I dont get spam comments, I just get loads of sh*t traffic. They are coming directly to registration page, having referees from the above sites...

You could try a CDN like CloudFlare. They do a pretty good job of filtering that sort of traffic, though your mileage may vary.

On some of my sites the prix shut down the hosting with f'ing zillions of bashes on the mySQL server - like 100's of simultaneous queries on it - and the host says ... na na na na na no seniorrrrrr!

Youve discovered the perils of running a membership site on WP
