It seems all my latest sites are getting mostly google images traffic at first.
(They are not images sites, but blogs with nice long text articles and few pics and sometimes videos in each post.)
And only some of the older are starting to get more and more of the standard search traffic.

Since this happens for quite few sites now, i thought it might be some kind of a trend others are noticing too?
So my question is have you had a case where your site appears in the google images first and later when it ages and establishes it's authority goes to the web search as well?

    p.s.
It seems that analytics doesn't report the traffic from google images correctly. It shows just couple of hits from there in the stats but the new visual filter tool in webmaster tools clearly shows that the image traffic is dominating big time. Which is confirmed by the fact, that the pages that get the most of the traffic are the wordpress image pages. (attachment pages)

    p.p.s
When exactly an imperssion from google images is counted. You know when you click google image result, it shows the small pic on focus with the website in the background and when you close the pic it loads the site behind normally.
On which step my site counts a hit?

My wife has a baking site with a ton of cake pictures etc, and she too gets a LOT of image traffic. The biggest reason probably for your images ranking high is that there is not as much competition in the "image" world yet. Does that make sense?
In her case (and with my SEO knowledge) her site is starting to get a lot of natural non-image traffic as well - which is pretty cool!

I get a lot if not all image traffic from one site.its on page 1 for the keyword and not many clicks for the keywords. 50 + for images, but thats like you said, close the image and then your on the site.In my case they leave after that soon.Im happy for that traffic ,it free.

It is the same case with me also. I launched a blog around 2 months back. I just posted one image in the blog homepage and not inside the post.

Within 10 days time, I was getting lot of google traffic for the competitive keyword. I knew i am not ranking. i was checking stats with analytics. Then i installed statpress plugin which clearly give me the search url. There i found out that all the traffic are from google images. but those are counted as hits in analytics.

I am also in the same situation, my blog gets a lot of visitors for competitive keywords but in the "image world of google". I have installed a frame-breaker and my CTR increased a bit, but after a few weeks, all my images dropped from first results in google, so basically no more visitors and no more clicks. I still have a few images which rank good, but I am not making any cent with them :)..
I was wondering if this sudden drop was due to frame-breaker, so if someone experienced the same please let me know.

This almost always happens with sites that have images included properly.

The reason you are seeing a high amount of impressions in webmaster tools is that image search has changed in 2010 and shows a hell of a lot more results on the first page now, often 200+ Images.

Also - it's not that difficult for the new school SEO types with wordpress to optimise their images, wordpress has all the fields there for you to fill out for maximum keyword optimisation when you insert an image.

just fill all the fields WP provides you for the image and be descriptive, not image1, image2 or so. Also set them to show on "attachment page" not just the image
