I gave my hosting username and password to someone who is building a site for me becase my hosting doesnt have cpanel.

I am just wondering if that was a very smart thing to do or not?

    Thanks

take mine as a noob's answer

I think any hosting provides cpanel and it is the core of the website anyway. and a person has cpanel login info could be dangerous enough if that person not trustable one.

I think cpanel access probably no less dangerous than hosting access - I'm sure you will be fine though, just change password after as good practice.

And no not all hosts have cpanel - some use plesk, some have their own custom interface;)

    Yes your answer screams "noob"

Cpanel is not bad but i would not call it good either. There are tons of other administration panels. if you trust the person you give the details and change them as soon as he is done everything should be fine.

Could they change your hosting password if you give them your cpanel details?

Yeah they could, but for the most part why would they. At most all they'd get is use of your hosting account until the next billing cycle. Probably not even that long because as soon as you let your host know and provide the proper proof they'd reset it and give you access back. A lot of password changes also require an email confirmation too, so unless he also has access to the email associated with your account you'll know right away and be able to prevent it.

Not saying it couldn't happen, but if you've done even a little due diligence to check the guy out then it's pretty unlikely.

If the guys business is setting websites up for people then it wouldn't be very good for his business to try stealing his customers hosting accounts. What's more likely if you did happen to have and unscrupulous guy is he would just set some background stuff to run off your website after he's done, or maybe go back to your account later and do the same. To prevent the first thing you just need to find people you can trust, to prevent the second just change your password after he's done.

If you've given access to your registrar, then there's a little more risk since it would be possible to steal the domain. But even that isn't likely unless you really have some valuable domain name.

It's so easy to get your own domain, or get your own hosting it really isn't worth it to try stealing them when you can make more money by setting them up.

So yeah it's possible, but if you have even a little trust in the guy then you probably don't need to worry about it. If he knows more than you about what needs to be done then the benefit you'll be getting is probably bigger than your risk.

Doesn't really matter what you have on your server, nothing, cpanel, directadmin, whatever.
If you give someone access to your server / account they could put down a backdoor to let themselves back in at any time - only thing you can do is never let anyone have access to be double sure you are safe.

However, if you need help then people need access - I have lost count of how many people I have helped out on here with servers etc. I don't keep a record of any details, delete IM log files after the job is done etc and make sure people either change their password or make me an account of my own which they can suspend / delete after I have done the work.

Remember the old saying - you pays your money, you takes your chance.

Go with someone you trust and all should be good....
