Seems like when he launched it competition was low. Yes I know Myspace was around. But look at how big the market was.
I mean now you would need to provide some free movies or something and content lock it for sign up blah blah to get things
    going.

    Cheers

I'd target all the people fed up with other social networks. My promotional would be about how mine is more user friendly, and how it benefits each and every aspect of that person. Then my promotional would be to suck up new people, only after I was able to get testimonials from the "jaded" and "cynical" people. My solid campaigns would consist of PPC, PPV, CPA with TV and magazine ads (social magazines and what not). My only goal would be to reach my ideal target audience and convince them to join. Currently right now, you would need to know what people want in a social network, not the fail P.O.S. that is Google+. Even in today's market you still should be able to correctly promote a social network like Facebook. I look to Christian Mingle as a example. Even though they are a "targeted" dating site, they effectively utilized the above to gain "authority" and get someone somewhere to join and pay for the service. Yes, perhaps a lot of the members are "free" but you still get a the idea of how the went from nothing to "authority" in a few years. I'd have to say that the owner must have had some good Black Hat knowledge at his disposal (you can find it searching BHW).

Very true, was pretty much an open playing ground at the time. I wouldn't really hit the free movies tbh I'd stay related to social media although its a good thought, thanks for your contribution made on this thread =)

I'd start by making a fanpage and getting some fans from YLH, then making a giveaway to go viral...
    Oh wait..

I'd say "it's nearly as good as Twitter and if you don't like the way it looks and works don't worry, another version will be along in a few months, tops". From a less cynical standpoint I would really emphasise all the things it does that Twitter doesn't, like the lack of a character limit and the extra content it has. Look at something like Farmville, for example. People who previously ran from Facebook like a scalded cat were signing up for it just to play Farmville. It's stuff like that that has made it the social network that everyone and their mother is on.

Twitter wasn't even about back then as far as I know but I do get the farmville aspect having something within the website to drag people on & they'll end up using their profile to socialise anyway. good point
