If you wanted to become an SEO professional where would you start? What would you do?
The SEO Section of BHW
Thanks but something more specific would be helpful
Look around for some keywords. Create a site around them and see if you are able to rank your website at number 1 in google.
I'll look into the Google's Wikipedia page and try to learn what the pagerank is and how it's used to quantify a site's relevance and authority and work my up onto learning on-page seo and then how and why backlinks fuels a site's ranking position(SERP) on search result pages, etc., Google uses 200+ algorithms but you don't have to go and find out all of them as they're constantly updated and tweaked. There are quite a few seo books available for download in bhw's download section. Read through it and you'll get a knowledge on how and why it works. It'll all look easy in theory but practising it on your site/blog is what going to make you a professional as you'll learn a lot only by doing and not just reading. Wish you luck to become a top SEO professional in the very future!
Here you go, look in the General/Misc/Overall Guides section in the below link.
Start learning On Page SEO first, then Off Page
I found this book invaluable: The Art of SEO (Theory in Practice) https://www.amazon.com/Art-SEO-Theory-Practice/dp/1449304214
When I first started I read a ton of articles online and took lots of courses. I found very quickly a lot of things you just need to do yourself to start learning so my advice would be to get out there and start trying out stuff on your own.
"SEO education" is toxic. Most of it is out of date. Most SEO knowledge is untested. The target of "what works" is constantly moving. If you want to be good at it then you need to figure out how to test a lot of assertions and figure out how to verify credible sources of information. For myself when I started measuring everything and proving things for myself the whole game changed and in doing that I differentiated my style of SEO from mainstream SEO in a very advantageous way. So the question I'd ask you is how do you intend to be different from other SEO Shamans who like to throw the chicken bones and divine what will or won't anger the Google? In my opinion you have two options... you can be the whitiest white hat and only do and say what Google approves you can do or say... -- OR -- you can put on your science hat and get academic with the experimental research as well as putting on your big boy business pants and track and report on SEO revenue for the business. I hope you go the experimental research route because the world doesn't need more blog believers... the industry needs more free thinkers making awesome discoveries.

I think BHW has already covered all the core SEO elements in its most effective ways here. You will find plenty of threads dealing with SEO startups and guides, which are useful for both beginners and SEO specialists. I would say, to become an SEO professional, you can be be an active participant at this market place first. Gaining knowledge and experience is what you need to do first.
Personally suggest you to learn other technical skill would be better.

The first thing you do is change your facebook status to CEO of page 1 interweb rankings company.
At least, that's what everyone else seems to do.
