if you refund a Paypal charge, do they undo the fees, too?

Say you get paid $50 and Paypal takes their fees of $5 or whatever, so you have $45. If you need to refund that, does paypal give back their fee so you can refund the entire transaction? Or do you end up losing $5 of your own to cover the fees they took out?

I've never had a refund so I"m just wondering

Paypal refunds the fees, you only pay the part that you got.

Don't manually send payments back. There will be an option saying "Issue Refund" use that option for issuing refunds.

Yes, use "issue refund". They will return everything to the person who made the payment and fees will all be canceled.

But check everything before you click the REFUND button, as they also give options to do a partial refund if you wish to.

For example if the goods where shipped and returned, but shipping charges are not refundable. You just refund the net payment in that case. Then, fees will be less, but not canceled.

    Its all up to you.

    Cheers.

In my experience with paypal, the fees are refunded.

Fees are definitely refunded but like they said use the issue refund button- you can even do a partial refund with that button...if you do not you will be out your refund and the buyer will still get their money back if unhappy. Paypal does not give a shit nor do they research the refund.

If you use a issue refund button then only payments fees refunded and if refund manually then fees will not be refunded.

so what happens then if you've already transferred the money into your bank account and THEN the person says they want a refund?

In that case, PayPal will still do the refund, but using whatever backup funding you have, either any of your bank accounts (if you enrolled any) or a Credit Card you may have on file.

Options will be presented to you before issuing the refund (PayPal Balance, Bank Account or Credit Card).

Also, if you have any PayPal balance, there will be a combined refund. The PayPal balance will be used first (no choice here) and then, the difference will be taken from the backup funding you choose.

Summarizing, PayPal just cancel the fees and return the funds to the customer if you issue a refund. Where you send the money back from, is up to you.
