Just finished up all my finances for the year, I've got some left over money to play around with.

I've lurked on this website for about a month, and see some people making a lot of money.

If I could learn as much as these people know, combined with my startup funds I believe I could start something extremely successful, enough to replace my day job.

My background is in sales and finances. I am thinking about learning SEO and selling my services to local businesses as well as building a website to sell a niche product.

You should firstly learn everything that there is about SEO and then make an investment :) Don't go blindfolded

With limited knowledge you should not make any investment at all. You might as well wipe your ass with $100 bills once a day for 50 days.

To be honest OP, You need to spend at least a couple more months to read everything there is about SEO on this forum and check out other blogs like: nichepursuits.com, backlinko.com, matthewwoodward.co.uk (REMEMBER DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM ANYONE) - They have these blogs to rake in money from noobs, the info they give out is good but DON'T buy any of that shit. Don't pay for any training any type of training, course or any other bullshit.

I'd advise you to start out as if you had no money, or very limited money. Find a good niche learn about on and off page SEO, look for some good keywords and setup a website. Write some articles and see how it goes. While you're going through this process you will face roadblocks that you'll eliminate one after the other.

Finally, your first project is probably going to be a failure but that's okay. I don't know anyone who did it right the first time. You'll only learn if you do it yourself, outsourcing only makes sense if you know what the process is or there is a high chance that you'll get fucked over. Even legit providers will fuck you over or they may overlook something that you will not be able to point out because you're not well versed yourself.

Good luck and welcome to BHW :) Remember, $100 ass wipes or learn to do the shit yourself and then invest.

I'd say keep a small budget for building a site and learning SEO, nothing teaches you SEO better than actually managing your own site. So you can keep like 500-800$ for a new site that you will work on (not expecting any returns) and just learn SEO along w it.

Just my thought. Good luck and please don't buy any courses with the money you have.

Learn SEO, learn to do good keyword research. Find good content writers for SEO content. Buy content + set up site + possibly hire someone to look over your SEO work if you don't have enough experience yet. If you have good keywords and good content, in a converting niche the possibilities are endless. Good luck :)

The reason why I'm looking to learn more about SEO & such is so I can get out of my current industry, working 60-70 hrs / week wears you out.
I'd rather leverage my time towards this industry & become my own boss.

Lots of great advice, thank you very much guys.

you can get already established traffic arbitrage site, but for $5k I don't think it would a good one or the one that already brings good profit, so I'd just create a new one and invest in advertising

    DEAD JOE

Is spot on here keep that money in the bank, what you should do is learn SEO as you go with your current expertise Finances. That is a huge niche
    Do this:

Start a blog(Creating engaging web content will be a skill you have to master do SEO so you should master this first)
Start Blogging about Finances or something else you think you could write great stuff about 2-4 times a week.
Create a Hire Me page on the blog
Start guest posting(Everybody loves financial tips and tricks and that target market generally is college educated medium to upper middle class)
Start Implementing what you learn in SEO
Once you get a couple of guest post gigs
get a testimonial and post it on your hire me page
Start getting freelance work and building your #95ExitNestEgg
Build your freelance blogging presence in social media
    Start offering your SEO Services
Build your Egg up to 6-12months of total living expenses
Evaluate if you are ready to take the plunge and #95exit or not
If not rinse and repeat the above
If you are, negotiate a severance package so that you can have income coming in for while after you leave and also to keep the door open in case something happens and you need to go back
Officially start the SEO Service(If that is still what you want to do)
Use what you have learned along the way to grow and expand.
    Save for retirement

Don't listen to those guru freaks they want that 5g's and will not care if something happens and you need that money for an emergency

You're out of pocket investment should be 150 to 200$:

    Domain
    hosting
WP Blog(Get a WP site and don't go free you need to learn the ins and outs anyway)
    Custom Theme if you want
Maybe a cheap course for 50$ bucks that walks you through step by step. How to start freelancing maybe to give you a kickstart(Do your research)

I know there are a lot of products and Youtube videos going on and on about this especially Becker and all those OMG guys like Kotton Grammer. But the reality is this:

-In the Seo Business you need to show results to win Clients
-Many people have been burned by foreigners or newbies that don't know what they are doing so their view of "SEO guys" Is that they are mostly scammers there is a very negative perception when it comes to SEO business because the nature of the results and how long they take, and the ignorance of most clients on SEO
-In order to win clients you need to come across as a quality legit agency with a beautiful website testimonials and "Proof" of your work.
-That's the problem with SEO it takes time to get that proof

So I would say you should listen to Joe and save your money create a blog and offer SEO Blogging services on it. You can easily get up to 100$ and hour doing this and it's low-stress minimum time commitment so that you don't kill yourself given that you already have a stressful job.

You can easily do this a and hour a night and on the weekend and be up in running fairly quickly, whereas with SEO this is a big undertaking and with you having a fulltime job already could spell disaster for you.

    -You need a simple start
    -Low stress entry
    -Minimum time commitment

Running a second gig ain't easy and there will be some rough times

Again do not buy any expensive PROGRAMS OR PRODUCTS right now.

Everything you need to learn you can find here or learn free elsewhere on The Google Empire

    Hope that helps

    Cheers

I'll disagree slightly with some of the comments. No, you probably shouldn't drop all of that money and yes, of course you should read all you can about it. I think that learning by doing is appropriate as well.

Spend money on a domain and hosting, find s strategy on here or somewhere else that you want to try and dig deep into it- but give it an honest shot. If there are some tools/plugins that make that strategy easier then go for it (assuming reviewers don't call the tool/plugin bullshit). Also, find some really well reviewed content writers and buy some content from them. Reverse engineer how they write their content (kw density, layout, H2's, etc).

All of these things thought shouldn't cost more than a few hundred.

p.s. Find your strategy/niche before buying hosting and domain.
