After the recent shakeup from the latest G updates, it has occurred to me that many of our members have overlooked a critical point in their IM/SEO ventures. I mentioned this in another thread, but I think it warrants its own thread. So, if you have only ONE thing you can do today, let it be this: stop surfing BHW for 20 min, and do the following:

    MAKE A BACKUP SITE NOW!

Yep, that's it! Pretty simple. Even if you can't afford new hosting/domains, just go to blogger, wordpress, weebly, or wherever, and register a new site now.

    Here's why:

If your main site gets hit, you won't clog up BHW with 'I was making $xxxx, now I lost everything.' posts. Sure, you'll still take a big hit probably if your site is penalized, but you won't go to $0, because you will have other assets that can still do some of the heavy lifting in the meantime. So, if you have an e-commerce site, use one of these new sites as a place to do little product reviews...show the product and how it is used, talk about the problems your products solve or get someone on fiverr to do a short video review/testimonial.

If you sell info or services, use it as a place to tell your story and develop a brand...talk about how you started your business, share your failures, explain the benefits of your service, post a couple videos that let people know why your service is relevant to their success.

There are so many things that could be said about this, but I'm really busy today, so I don't have time. Anyway, you'd be surprised how one little step like this can mean the difference between retaining your business and losing everything overnight. Think of it as a life preserver for your income...if everything goes pear shaped, you'll still have something to hold on to.

(Oh, one last tip: I find that free blogger sites are also a great resource for those times when your site goes down [remember GoDaddy a few months ago!?!?]...put your business email on the free site (as an image file so it doesn't get scraped) so that people can still contact you and ask questions.)

Now, stop reading and MAKE THAT SITE!

This ^ Not only for G updates, but for general security. I've been hit by hackers a couple times in the past. The worst feeling is when you have to rebuild your site from scratch.

^^Agreed about the hackers point as well. It is so easy to get content up, especially video, when you can just basically read an article (rephrasing on the fly) that someone has written about the topic. I think 4-5 decent little articles are a good place to start with an initial seed, then just update once in a while. Really, it takes about an 20-45min a week, and it is time well spent.
