If too many bad links can hurt you, why not link to your competition?

I recently was talking to one of my clients who is freaking out because he doesn't want his website taken off Google because of too many links being built at once. I calmly replied "Well if that is the case, why don't I create a bunch of links to your competition and take them off Google?" He then asked "Wait, you can do that?" :pat:

Total confession, I'm only 99% sure that a link will never negatively effect your ranks in the long run. So the question is can building a link ever hurt you?

I've had shitty links hurt me before. But ultimately, most people don't go "google bowling" knocking off competition because their time is better spent building quality links to their own site. Imagine if you have 10x competitors come up over a year. Your time definitely would've been better strengthening your own site instead.

in my experience you are fine if you dont push crawling your links
just let G fspiders find them naturally

Too many links hurts a site that doesn't have a good ranking. Sites that already have a good ranking are much less vulnerable to being hurt.

That is why everyone fries their site with massive backlinks and google dance into oblivion (because they're not already ranked) and that's why you typically can't do much to your competition (because they're already ranked #1 and more shielded from spammy links).

So what you will do to your client with a massive backlink campaign direct to their site will probably sandbox/google dance (in reality, penalize) them for a long period of time. It is unnecessary to have penalties like that freaking your client out, build a smaller amount of web2.0s and then backlink to the web2.0s. Build link pyramids instead of scrapebox/xrumer blasts. It is far more secure for your client and you won't be avoiding phone calls when their site is dancing for months.
