Just wondering, not that the place I used to harass wants to report my ISP, but just in case. I know how to change my ip by doing the ip/release thing. But suppose a chat room or forum reported me to my ISP? If I change my IP address, can my ISP find me?

What do you mean with changing your IP. Do you reconnect and change your ip (LOL), or you connect using a proxy?

Won't save you - ISP's keep RADIUS logs (google 'em), and if your IP changes, its just logged in the system & updated. They can always trace you back.

    Wifi for the win!

Hell yes .... Doesn't matter where you live, in most countries government require ISPs to collect the information.I think in the US it is 90 days (if they didn't change it again) and then they might voluntarily destroy it, however many keep it longer / forever. I guess that's why you use a double proxies, with one being in China etc... Anyway, best not to "harass" (whatever that means) anyone ...

you used your own ip address to "harass" someone (not a good idea) lol but yea even if you change your ip with the mac address clone and modem restart or whatever you do they log.

They didn't say they would report my ISP. It's a roleplay place, I didn't spam it up, or like flood. I Evaded a ban, and they permanently banned me. But let's say they did report me to my ISP, would they give me a warning? Or terminate my account?

When they permenantely (didn't know I was perma banned at the time) but when they banned me, for some reason I think it's because I reformatted my computer my IP to get in, and I posed as someone by putting an I in their name. I couldn't get back in for some reason lol so I asked them to unban me they didn't. So I was officially "permentanly banned" which I finally found out.

So, I told them at the time when I didn't know I was permanently banned I posed as someone (No hacking); and that name got banned. Mind you, it was the name with an i in it. The situation is delt with, and they didn't say anything about reporting me to my ISP. Should I be worried?

What if you threaten someone? I threatened someone a year ago in that chat room, I told a girl "You're dead! You're dead if you report me to the moderators! You're dead"!

Yes they can find out who you are because just as we have the ability to view the stats and logs of our sites traffic, path and activities so does the ISP provider have the ability to track and they do log all of the various IP traffic that they grant access to.

    the basic standards are now......

SMS, EMS and MMS: Data retention period 6 months.
Email: Data retention period 6 months
ISP Logs: Data retention period 6 months
Web Activity Logs: Data Retention period 4 day

these are growing towards being the industry standards, but they are not quite there yet as several US ISP providers have stated that they will "look into" what is reasonable....

Remember, with this terrorist thingy worldwide, tracing and logging and finding - in the name of preventing terrorism - is the popular justifications

(okay, now i can step down off of this pedestal of mines, :D)

I rushed typing, NO I did not reformat my computer to get back into a chat, I reformatted my computer WHEN it crashed, which happened to change my IP address allowing me to get back in. (Did not know, but i figured it out later)

Damn that was funny. I keep learning new expressions every day.

-- Edit. Note to noobs. The best way to change your IP is by formatting your PC and installing VISTA. Only install vista. Make sure you update your router's firmware to reflect your vista build. Oh and 1 other thing. If you have a printer, use your printer's IP address instead of your PC.

^^ Sorry. Me trying to be funny. Yah.
