    Hi fellow black hatters,

My server has been down for about 8 hours already and I have recently contacted my web host support and they said it is having an issue and they are now doing maintenance to bring back the server up. I confronted him straight to the point and ask if there's anything like DDOS then it's ok to tell me....he said no it's pure server issue.

Now let's say my site is down for total around 12 hours, would it affect my SERPs badly? If yes, and let's say my site has been back up, how long does it need before i get my original rankings?

If you get unlucky and google tries to index you while you are down, it could have a temporary effect until your next indexing.

I wouldn't worry too much though, any change should be temporary.

it can affect you. Best thing to do would be to check webmaster tools to see if there were any requests when your server was down, then request those pages when its up again.

I've done this and it worked great for the page that was down

No it does not affect much from my personal experience. From my experience, SE wait for a few days before making the changes as they also perhaps know that downtime can happen once in a while. I have had websites down for a week and then bouncing back. And even during the downtime they were indexed. It is also about site authority and trust I suppose but overall it would hardly effect especially half a day of downtime. Quite sure about it. Even if that happens it would just be temporary and fix itself in the next few days.

I think you are right. After all i just checked my google webmaster tool and apparently there's no error at all in crawler access etc.

    Thanks anyway for the explanation.

I had the same problem except all my data went with the crash too. Hope it doesn't happen to you. Goodluck.

The way I look at it is this way. If it's an authority site, then you don't have to worry. A couple of months back, I was in a bit of financial mess and I didn't have money to pay my hosting fees. One of my sites which was on google first page was offline for nearly one month because the host suspended my account due to non payment. Once, I had the money, I paid the hosting fees and my account was restored. I did nothing, but within 2-3 days, the site was on google first page again after more than one month of dissaperance :)
