If I transfer a Namecheap domain to Hostgator do I keep the WhoIs protection?

I'm just about to buy a domain on Namecheap to transfer to my hosting, will I keep the free WhoIs protection because otherwise I'll just buy it from Hostgator.

Just to be clear, are you talking about transferring the domain to HG or pointing the domain to HG?
 
Then, yes. It will retain it's whois protection. However, there might be a lapse in whois protection during migration. Contact HG to confirm if there'll be a hole during the migration.
 
What about pointing the domain? I want to keep my domains on NC and host on HG.

No issue with keeping Whois?

yes there would be no issues and you can use privacy protection
just for your clarification pointing means using hostgator nameservers
if you transfer domain to hostgator then private whois will be lost
