There are also web solutions around which allow you to check rankings directly from your web browser( however they charge you monthly for their services )

Low quality links won't bring you a good result. To increase your rankings you need buy high quality links. Preferably it should be links inside content which is relevant to your website. Also the less outbound links the page with your backlink has the higher PR weight it will pass to your site. And don't forget that after your link building campaign should pass around 3 months before your rankings will be increased.

Have you tried Googling your keywords? That's probably the easiest method :)

That is not correct. Alexa can't really track your traffic. There are a lot of examples where a 900k alexa rank site has 10times as much traffic as a 100k alexa rank site. Please get your facts straight.
You can easily boost your alexa rank without real traffic (if you know how).
 
Before u buy backlinks, make sure your on page is good.
 
One or a simple way to see backlinks work or not, just try searching for keywords that you use on your website in the search engines, if your site is on the first page or not. if there was a sign backlinks help your website be on the first page.

No need to buy to be able to save a backlink, just need to save the article on a free site with register first and then input backlinks there.
Or by way of the comments on other people's sites and leave the link there that leads to the main web.

buying backlinks have always been a mixed bag for me. sometimes I get a good link package that noticeably improves my serps leading to increased revenue on my sites and other times I get a bunch of junk links that dont do squat. Link diversity is key too. the more you mix it up the better.
