IM or to be more specific SEO can be extremely boring. It can be so boring that you sit down, open your browser or whatever program you want to work in and when you think about how boring it will be to work on what you're about to do you immediately switch to doing something else like coming to BHW or reading some random article on some random blog.

The problem is obvious, even when you're working on something you are subconsciously bored and are looking for something entertaining. This has been a common problem for me personally, I would sit down to start work on some project and even if I don't get carried away by going to BHW or by doing something else I would only manage to work for a few minutes before something else carries me away.

I usually manage to force myself to work until I hit something interesting and get into "the zone" but yesterday I found a solution and it's a real kicker.

Now I don't guarantee that this will work for everyone, it might distract some people even more but it definitely works for me. The secret key for me was playing music relatively loud. That's right, by playing music somewhat loud my mind seemed to be occupied with something else and I could focus on the work at hand without much difficulty.

Something else that might or might not work for you is white noise http://simplynoise.com/

I emphasized the loud part because if the music wasn't loud enough I would filter it out and my thoughts would still distract me but when the music is just loud enough it blocks out my thoughts and I just focus on what I'm working on.

In my experience the best way to go for it is to listen to music 20 or so minutes before you start working and then start working, you will soon get into the zone and it will be extremely easy for you to work.

Try it yourself and reply back with your insights

I always listen to music relatively loud.
Pink noise is better then white in my opinion.
I'm so bored right now, planning to get drunk.

Whenever I am bored, I normally start reading the stack of books I have or I simply start playing my guitar :)

When I get bored I think about what my life used to be like, answering
to a boss, sometimes even being a boss, but having to live by the
rules of others. Punching a clock, sitting in traffic (total waste of life), having to dress up
everyday. I essentially focus on the NEGATIVES of being in the conventional work force.

When I focus on the negatives of my past, I find myself more excited about the present.
Less bored, more driven. Music helps, though not too loud, otherwise I'd get distracted.

I like travelling a lot, that requires $, and $ requires focus. End of boredom. or a lack of productivity.

Great post! I usually listen to relaxing hip hop instrumentals to keep me going but I find that brown noise delightful.

I will try this out as music usually works for me, but people talking anywhere near me destroys my concentration.

Anyone else have the TV or internet video playing in the background constantly during the mundane stuff? Makes it not feel like work, music isn't stimulating enough on its own for me.

This doesn't really work for me. How's white, pink, brown, noise supposed to help?

I don't use the various noises, I use music but in my experience it distracts you just enough so it blocks the thoughts that might distract you from your work but it isn't distracting enough to distract you from your uhm...what was I saying, oh yea. I prevents you from being bored by what you're doing and switching to something else instead of working...

    Distracting :D

    What's the difference ?

I mean it's sound, you can't watch a video while working on something can you ?
Or do you mean that music is too passive for you and that you need something active like conversation or something.

I did something like that a while ago, I had Branagh 1996 version of Hamlet running in the background while working, worked quite well.
