    Remember this?

    I agree windows 10 is good.

    But the search function is shit. I have a ton of apps+files. Cortana tryna help me find a restaurant when she can't even find apps I frequently use.

    So I was searching for a solution and found this gem.

    http://www.classicshell.net/

    You can make a ton of customization. But I like the old (start menu + search), the most. You can still use win 10 start menu with this if you want.

    Give it a try.

    I feel better using Win 10 than 7,8, 8.1.

    But I turned of Cortana... :);)

    Thanks. Now my start menu completely works like good old win 7.

    I tried disabling earlier. My problem was the search function. It is just real bad IMO.
    I'm more of a keyboard guy. I normally press win button and start typing the name of the program I want to use.

    win + "hrome" >> even if I miss the 'c' in chrome while typing, I want it to display Chrome. Classic Shell helped me achieve this. (Plus lot more).

    Yeah the new look just pisses you off more because it tries to be kawaii about a legit problem, like if it happens when you didn't save your work.

    Yeah, at least the classic bsod was honest, fatal error=windows fucked up.

    Now they try to dress it up and make it sound like such a minor issue so you don't feel like putting your fist through the screen!!

    Actually DWS does not remove Cortana. The binaries are still present and it still runs. Look for searchUI.exe in the process tab of the Task Manager. I do use DWS and Spybot Anti-Beacon in case I have missed any telemetry apps or settings. The script I pointed to earlier completely removes Cortana and it uses a Windows Installation Media (WIM) Trick to do it. The WIM is a method of creating Installation media for other computers. It is the only method that will remove Cortana without borking the OS. I have been voted down on Windows forums for mentioning that Cortana can be completely removed because Microsoft says it cant.

    I also use this Powershell script to remove the other bloatware and excessively chatty apps:
    Code:
    #   Description:
    # This script removes unwanted Apps that come with Windows. If you do not want
    # to remove certain Apps comment out the corresponding lines below.

    Import-Module -DisableNameChecking $PSScriptRoot\..\lib\force-mkdir.psm1

    The Stuff that cannot be removed with this script can still be removed and I remove it using this Powershell script to remove it:

        #"Xbox" # This will result in a bootloop since upgrade 1511
    )

    foreach ($needle in $needles) {
        echo "Trying to remove all packages containing $needle"

        $pkgs = (ls "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages" |
            where Name -Like "*$needle*")

        foreach ($pkg in $pkgs) {
            $pkgname = $pkg.Name.split('\')[-1]

            Takeown-Registry($pkg.Name)
            Takeown-Registry($pkg.Name + "\Owners")

            Set-ItemProperty -Path ("HKLM:" + $pkg.Name.Substring(18)) -Name Visibility -Value 1

            Remove-Item      -Path ("HKLM:" + $pkg.Name.Substring(18) + "\Owners")

            dism.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:$pkgname /NoRestart
        }
    }

    You should pay attention to the warning at the top of the script because I only vouch for it on my computers.

    I replace the Windows apps with MusicBee, VLC, and Irfanview.

    I have other scripts still in WIP stage that fix or remove all of the registry privacy setting.

    In closing, just because MS says it cant be done does not mean it cant be done - only that they want you to believe it cant be done. You would be shocked at how much the crap slows down the OS.

    On the bright side, you were immune from WannaCry. WC cause blue screens in XP before it could install. The other bright side is that many, if not most of the DLLs are just wrappers around the XP DLLs. I have unwrapped a few of them.
