I was very lucky to have picked up a top domain name some years ago that has good keywords in it like "Free Images XXXX" (non adult) it gets around 100 unique's a day and most are just from "Type In" traffic. it's been running on a simple wordpress theme and I pick up around $20 in ad earnings a month. I have around 200 of my own photos (about 800px wide) uploaded to it with no restrictions on the users to download and do what they want with them. I don't have a camera anymore so it's not as easy to take photos for it plus time is limited even if I bought a simple one. I have taken some OK ones with my smartphone now and then which has a fairly good camera in it.

I'm thinking I could be sitting on a gold mine if I could come up a plan to overhaul the website, make it more robust to handle lots of images, find a wordpress theme that would work better with the ads and also get a load more traffic. Plus I should consider getting more images somewhere on a daily basis that I can upload with no restrictions too.

If anyone has some ideas that can help it would be great.

You could try to place popups on the website, other then that overhaul the design and add new ad spots. Post more images as well.

I would go with that, as well as add some ad space obviously!

I think you should determine first where are your traffic coming from, if it is from tier 1 country, then try to find ads that pay high rate with that country,

I think you should lock the "download" option and go with image affiliate websites, where you get paid for the number of downloads. Or per views, upload a tiny image on your website, on click send them to these kind of websites. It should work. Good luck!

I like the idea of thumbnails that lead to the real image on an affiliate website. I will look into that, cheers!

I have been looking, I found fotolia.com but they don't have much in tools to help. I also looked at Shutterstock but that seems more for photographers that want to sell their photos. Keeping in mind there has to be a FREE offer even if there is the ability for the visitor to buy high res versions since my website has "Free Images" in the name... I have written to iStockphoto/Getty images about what they offer on their affiliate program as well.
