I'm looking to rank well in a niche where the majority of the sites display the same product listings. Nobody on the front page really has any unique content or good backlinks, they are just ranking well solely on domain authority. Granted some of these pages have PR 3 or 4 just due to internal links.

I've seen some micro-niche sites and emd's ranking well with a 1 page lander with about 1000 words of content. My domain has some authority as well, so I'm thinking that combined with some unique content should really make an impact.

How should I structure my kick ass content to start rising in the SERPs?

Should I go for 1000 words of content? Should I include images and an embedded youtube video? Should I through in some h2-h5 tags, as well as lists?

Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Any recommendations on stellar content providers is welcome as well!

after panda, time on page, bouncebacks, time on site have become very important. Content too long might turn off some readers. It happens. So you will have to make sure that readers stay on the site. Especially make sure that you avoid instant bouncebacks. Do everything in your power to not turn off the reader once they enter the site. Content too complicated or too long might turn out for the worse.

On the other hand, 1000 words? Would that really help? Absolutely. Having related phrases and words in a web page is very important to rank for a term. Maybe it is all the more important post panda. But ensure you format the page and make the reader feel at home. Use lists - people love it. Use engaging copy, images and catchy subheadings.

Do not be afraid to insert related content in the middle of the 1000-word web page as an effort to make the readers navigate your site [ as opposed to ending the session]. Make that in red color to grab eyeballs easily.

I appreciate the advice. The content would be at the bottom of the page below product listings. They won't see it unless they scroll down. I've got 2500 words split into 5 different sections. I'm thinking for each section do the title in h2, then show the first paragraph of the content floated next to a related picture. At the end of the first paragraph I can have a "Read more" link that will toggle the display for the rest of the text in that section. This way it is neat and tidy looking, and doesn't turn people off with all 2500 words visible at once. My only concern is that the text contained inside the toggle-able area is technically inside a div container with display:none. Does Google still index this content and value it the same in terms of SEO compared to regular text that is always visible to the user?

    Thanks!

Anything over 400 words is good for content although I rank number 2 on a mego competitive kw with 250 words.

If you going to use video host one of your own via amazon s3 and use a video sitemap. I've tested this on customers Panda hit sites and adding a self hosted video and sitemap has increased their rankings. It's definitely a quality signal in Google's eyes rather than embedding a youtube video which has been a spammers trick for years.

You must have 700 words plus content and it must be unique with keywords used with a density of 2- percent only in my opinion.

I doubt if anyone can have an exact answer for your question.. I guess there is no easy way to find out. I understand Google as a network of micro/macrocosms. What works in one niche may not work in others. I can always find evidence to disprove any theory that anyone can come up with. Sometimes it's obvious that even folks at Google don't have a clue.

Having said that, I think there are certain indicators/pointers to increase the chances of your site's success. Just like the ones members have mentioned above. Your only way to find out what works is by spying on some of your successful competing sites and figuring out their strategies. That's easier said than done am afraid :(
