I am interested in starting a local service that would help local businesses (restaurants, bars, clubs, etc) with sms and email marketing. I want to approach them with the idea that I can help increase their sales and build a steady clientele for them. Off the top of my head, this would work well for a local Chinese take out place where I could send an sms or an email to people stating "receive 25% off your order tonight with this coupon code." You could use a variety of promotion methods.

My question to you gurus is whether this idea is doable and if so, can it be profitable? I live in the U.S. and I can offer this service for a one time setup fee along with a monthly fee. For email marketing, should I use the services of aweber and make it automated or is there a better solution that is cheaper and would work in my benefit? Do you have any suggestions for companies that do sms marketing? I saw one online (http://www.textsmsmarketing.com) that charges $50 for 5000 messages.
I recall someone here had made a software that allowed you to send messages from your computer or gmail account. If someone can point me in the right direction to a software that is available for sms marketing, that would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for the advice!

This is a good idea and if you apply it I think it can make some $. I especially think the SMS thing will be appealing. Not many people doing that yet and it will excite the business owners.

I remember reading that post about the SMS software too, but the guy did not share it. If you ever find it let me know.

The one thing I would recommend is that you DO NOT suggest you can help them increase their sales. That's really not what you're offering. You're offering to promote them and increase traffic to their business.

This is a classic mistake that many consultants with seo, websites and other Internet services are making and what gets them into trouble and can get them sued for non performance.

You have no control over their sales. The sales is up to them. It depends upon their staff, their inventory, the economy, their business model and hundreds of other things you have no control over. The only thing you can do is help to increase the number and quality of their traffic. The rest is up to them.

    Think about it,
    Talk to you soon...

SMS marketing is a great way for businesses to keep in contact with existing customers but it does not allow businesses to find new customers. This is because it has to be permission based. Permission being the user texting a keyword to a short code. (Ex. text "loan" to 85700) The service is perfect for companies that need to send out reminders. (Ex. don't forget your loan payment! WEB ADDRESS) The delivery with a keyword/short code is right at 100%!!!

If you send messages without a short code then it goes out via smtp and get's blocked just as email marketing does...

Verizon has been know to take legal action against unsolicited sms message as well.

There's a wordpress plugin called EasySMS that enables the site admin to send text messages to subscribed mobile numbers right from the WordPress panel. It's free.

I run a Local directory site and offer free directory listings to local businesses. I sell the top 3 spots in each category but that's another story.
I added an SMS widget to my wordpress install that allow's me to capture mobile numbers, if the visitor enter's it. Then I turn around and sell a 1 time blast to one of the businesses on my site for $25 (you could go higher). I also give a free blast away if a business will do a "Free Lunch" give a way. I require them to capture the name, email and mobile number, then draw a name for a free lunch and afterwards give me the info to enter into my marketing tools.

    semperfiwebdesign do com/custom-applications/sms-text-message/
That's the widget I use, this is a non-aff link. I have added it to just about all my sites. Most of which are local based and keep growing my lists.

Can you go into more detail about the short code? I see those all the time and don't know how to get one. Is there a service that the big companies use?

I have talked to many business owners who use sms services in my town. They all claim they are seeing an increase of profits because of this strategy. A very popular coffee shop owner gets swarmed in a matter of minutes when he runs his sms special offers. This is proven to work. If I where him I would also look into investing in bluetooth marketing also.

Does he just have a sms system he runs from his phone/laptop himself or does he have a service like the one I am starting :) that charges him every month and they do it for him?

I've explored the text message business a little and came across a white label solution where you can set up your own company. Look up Ad King

    Hope this helps

good idea but tough because of spam laws. if the business took down #'s then you could use those - if not then suggest they start.

I think you should set up a mobile landing page for the restaurants with a phone redirect (so you can track the calls). When a customer clicks the call now button
you get paid. Go to admob and set up a geographical region and a ppc campaign,
then charge the restaurant more than you ppc, and it's all automated.

Rather than start a new service, I have an existing SMS service for US based opt-in text message marketing. If you're interested, PM me for details...

It's a good foundational idea, just needs cooperation from the owner and a bit of strategy on how to centralize in on the customers, but it seems like you have that figured out.

    Good luck to ya!
