When starting out, I suggest you get a basic reseller package from a site like HostGator or someone along those lines.

As your business gets larger and larger, invest into some of your own servers.

You would have to pay for WHMCS separately so I'd recommend starting with Hostgator (included free) and then if and when you scale up, get a decent Dedi and a WHMCS license.

I would recommend doing a bit of reading before you go ahead and launch your own web hosting company.

There are few things that suck more than a shitty web host, as many here will attest.

On the flip side, if you do web design and want to market your web host to small, local businesses, that you make profit by doing web design for -- it might not be so bad. I wouldn't try selling a large scale hosting company until you really know the ins and outs of the market!

Hosting is a low margin, high volume business. Reselling others hosting is asking for trouble. They can change a policy and screw you (and take your customers) on a whim.

building out your own infrastructure is actually pretty easy. but you need capital for that. And no, WHCMS is awful for a small boutique hosting service.

Study up, see what others are doing. Seek advice (what your doing here) and you may be able to cater to locals, etc. and do okay.

And yes, I own a hosting company with our own datacenter. It's just for my local whitehat brickand click businesses. But we do do SEO, etc. for them so that is where the real money is. Hosting just gives an additional revenue stream, and total control.

Reselling another hosting sets you within limits, setting your own hosting is easy but you need some capital to start with.

this is probably the best advice you're gonna get on this topic.

i do web design and use this method to put a nice add on to the project.

hostgator is the best out there. their support is pretty dang good which you'll need if you don't know anything about hosting.
