    Hi guys,

I created an article on my site last year and got it to #1. It was #1 for months then it fluxated somewhat from 1st to 8th and reverted back to 1st.

In January, and since then, its been yo-yo-ing.

Its now sitting at 21. Some days it will be back at number 10, some days as high as 4 and then it drops.

All LSI and related terms for that specific page had dropped even worst and haven't returned.

The main keyword has a keyword density of 1.59% (The article is over 2000 words).

My backlink profile is over optimised for the targeted term and LSI terms.

Im unsure if I should make any on page changes, change the anchor text from my web 2.0's pointing to my article, or if i should just build new links on new web 2.0's for just brand terms and urls.

    What do you guys think?

Also thought it would be worth noting that my homepage is PR0 where as my 'money article' is PR2

One tactic that works in situations like these are going back into the original article and adding some updated information and then having your site show to Google that it was indeed updated. Google's new logarithm loves fresh content and will a lot of the time rank it better than content that has been sitting around for quite some time.

I actually updated the article in December last year after my first drop (all my LSI terms were still ranking strong). After i changed the content boom i was back at top again. I've never had a drop this bad though for it to be in the 20's for my main keyword, but now all my lsi terms which i was ranking well for im in position 40+

When i search for my site brand name + keyword into google 3 other articles on my site (not targeting that keyword) outrank it also. Very confused as to why that is happening.

Bump it up into 1.2-1.4% and how is your anchor text variation?

How about you stop worrying about irrelevant decimals and focus on how you can add more value to your article so that is deserves to be on top? Come on now, this isn't 2010.

The quality of the article is 'good'. I wrote it myself, and as I said it has ranked 1 for a months in the past.

My thoughts where that I had perhaps over optimised the article, however with just 0.78% that's not the case.

My backlink profile tbh is where i think things have gone wrong.

Anchor text variation is as follows

    Ahrefs:
    Money word - 3%
    Very close related term 21%
    Very close related term 10%
    Very close related term 6%

Everything else 5% and under. This page has far more back links than my home page. It was my attempt at tiered link building, and i got it ranked for over 6 months #1, however at the end of January thats when things went wrong.

So im wondering if i should change anchors on the links i've created manually, update the page content again, or just continue to build branded links and naked url links spread between this page and my homepage.

Opinions welcome and thanks for the replies so far guys!

I think you should increase keyword density a little, refresh the article, and slowly build some new links - increasing direct anchor percentage - your tactics at the moment almost look a bit too cautious IMHO.

So up the targeted keyword density in the article, and up the back link profile for the exact match anchor?

Will upping the backlink anchor text for exact match not incur further penalties?

Check competition Backlinks and work on you seo. . Some social shares will also help. Backlinks from Big Aurhority sites (few of them) will make your site jump. So, analyze your competition, find the wealness and cover it

    Home Page:
Type google search "h your keyword" or "w your keyword" - the point is to find long question about your keyword. Include this question in the article in H1 tag and answer it with few words - google love this and if you not use this technique it's time to do it. Create some backlinks using this question as anchor. Increase the anchor density for the main keyword - first check competitors density using tool like majesticseo and get the average. Create some fresh links to the top backlinks that the site have - this reminds g00gle that they are active and not created just for backlinks to manipulate the SERP. Check the lost links - try to re-create them. If nothing helps post back :).

Thanks for the tips. I'll look to change some of my h tags, increase keyword density to around 1%, and build some more web 2.0 backlinks with exact match keyword and brand / anchor urls along with linking to my homepage.

    Thanks !

Here is an update on my situation guys,

When searching for my website brand name + keyword my 'money article' is no longer showing in the serps. Its apparantley ranking 40th for the keyword alone according to my rank tracker.

Im seriously lost as to what to do.

Change on page content, build more links (with what anchor text?) remove old links, change anchor of old links?

Please help guys. Im getting desperate here.

This is really easy, you are already ranking for the articles, for me i would tackle this with 2 options, update the article with even more content and build a few more quality high PR backlinks, or leave the article alone and focus on providing more detailed and quality articles for your readers and Google of 2014 will bless your efforts :)

Lets be honest, your competitors are not trying to over optimize the article they wrote since last year, they might have even paid someone to write 20 more while you are busy worrying about the one you published last year and updated a few times, who would see beautiful ladies and still be running after an old granny ? Google is all about the new cool :)

    Great point,

So making more posts related on the main article, interlinking.

On a different note, my serp tracker is still showing sh*t rankings but i've just searched using a clear cache and on google uk im number 1 again, and google.com #4 . I seriously have no idea wtf is going on.

are you sure you booked number 1 spot again? most probably you are log-in to google and the search engine just returned the most visited page (which is your site) on top of the search result. to be exact clear about the position, use one of the third party queries such as: http://www.positeo.com/check-position/ , good luck and wish that you are really number 1
