I seriously think google is fucking with us or in such a mess that they don't know what they're doing.

My keyword gets over 300K searches monthly. Medium competition. I was always page one, position 10 ... till penguin hit.
I did nothing at all to the site, nada, zip, ziltch ... (oh sorry I upgraded my theme, but that was about a week after penguin hit).

About 10 days ago it started to pick up again, and now its in position 5 !!! Funny thing is all my old competition (with the exception of 2 sites) were wiped out from the 1st page.

So what conclusion can I draw from this? I feel like sticking my head in the microwave.

Oh by the way, that site was a test site of mine. It never meant to be popular. I blasted xrumer to it, everything is copied with exception of 2 articles... Just an overall newb job.

Your situation is interesting. Could you please post the general backlink profiles of your competitors? Have they spammed using xRumer as well?

I concur. One of my money sites was hit hard with the firs Penguin update. After that, I stopped all backlinking (gradually over 3 weeks time) and just went on with regular updating of posts on the websites. Somewhere during August traffic picked up again.

To test this, last week I started a new site and going with the theme of "no seo is best seo" (But I couldn't help and gave in to the temptation and built 5 links + regular backlinks from twitter/video hosting sites). So far, this site is taking its time for ranking in Google, but as far Bing is concerned, its already getting me some traffic. The big question will be when the next Penguin update comes through, it will be worth watching if this new site of mine will pass through or get hit.

    My site is US based.
    Its a EMD.

The site always aimed for 1 keyword, as its a very specific niche. It does get a few random other keywords, but those were not affected by penguin.
