you could probably use something like a dreambox to stream.

    Wow
Seems like everybody is getting in on this. i'm a late comer to the niche. But my partner and I have a few domains we are ramping up this month. One of them we are planning on running as a PPV site.

I just started doing the research myself, so all the info I have is for developing a "proof of concept" site. If it works, we throw cash at it, build it out and scale it up.

If you are in the US and have direct TV you can use their software.it's on their site. that will pull the transmission to your pc. As an alternative, you could install a tv card in your pc or get an external tv card. Then plug your cable or satelite box right into it.
and there you go, TV on your PC.

Now you need to get that on your server. If you have your server hooked up to your tuner card and lots of bandwidth, you are set. If not, that is the next hurdle.
For that you'll need to stream video. There is TONS of info on the inter webs about that. There is software, services you can pay for , etc.

The best part is that video streaming has been around a long time. There are even word press plugins for it. So the trick, is just finding the solution that works for for you an getting all of the pieces to line up.

so this is what you need:
    • a PPV feed
    • an encoder like a TV tuner
    • BANDWIDTH
    • video streaming software
    • a site to show the world how brilliant you are
    • monetization! You need to get paid

You can also do this with sites like ustream and justin. CageFighter posted tips on that in another thread.

Also this diagram may help: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/streaming.html

    Good luck!

    I also found this.
    http://www.orb.com/

I haven't installed this yet, but, it looks like you have to send out invites to have people access your data. And it looks like you get your own streaming channel on their site. and it works on iphone freakin PERFECT :)

So now you also get to build a list of people that want to view your stuff.
They go to your site; watch the video, see that ads next to the video.
go onto the stream channel You can chat and tell them about affiliate offers.
You can then email them about upcoming events and upsell them on offers.

Man I love this business :)

I've been in this niche for a while but coincidently have just sold up and moved on to a new business.

All you need is a TV card so you can stream your TV to a media player on your laptop/PC.

My number one tip is use uStream to host your streams and then embed this in your site. This will save you a fortune on bandwidth. uStream has tutorials to help you setup your own channel etc so I'm not going to help you with this but it is pretty simple.

Only problem with using third party is that they may ban your channel when you start getting a ton of views. Therefore I would recommend having about 10 backup accounts at all time (no need for a proxy, they dont ban IP's) which you can switch in when banned.

Make sure you a have a server with loads of RAM (over 2GB) to handle big traffic spikes from PPV events. I had about 100,000 uniques before in an hour for boxing and it destroyed my dedicated with 8GB RAM (lol!)

Big money in PPV events if you can provide a quality stream. I'd recommend using a gateway to monetize as asking for donations etc usually gets you screwed over by stingy people (hence watching free streams lol).

Drop me a PM if you need a hand as like I said I'm out the game now ;)

    100k uniques? awesome.
I may hit you up when we get our act together.

hopefully orb doesn't ban as quickly.
