    Hi All,

I live in India and I'm planning on buying an HP Mini model that is available only in the US. My brother lives there and if I ask him to ship using USPS, do i need to pay any duties once it arrives here? Also, the item is $300. Can anyone let me know the best shipping options?

If I plan to go with USPS, what service of their's should I select as I don't want to pay much for shipping. Please help!

I am not in India but in my opinion, it's best to get someone to bring these things with themselves when they fly back. You might end up paying a lot of custom fees if you get it through post and it might also get damaged.

All things you get from foreign countries to India which are of value > Rs.10,000
are taxable at rate of 12.5 %.

There is no one who is flying back to India at this time and I desperately need this item.

Oh! is that so? But I came across a listing in ebay where the seller ships it to India via USPS with $98 as shipping charge. Also, since the item will be delivered to me directly, where does all this 'paying custom duties' come into picture?

Whatever little I know of Indian Customs, your laptop might never even cross the customs! We have the mot rotten customs department in the world, and draconian laws that very protectionist. Very bad idea, get it from a person you know.

The custom duties can be as high a 110%!! I'm not sure 12.5% would be the charge, as that way every electronic product might seem cheaper than in India.

go to the airport see if one of the airlines will ship 4 you if not there are hundred of business people flying might be hard but you might be able to convince one of them to take the laptop for a fee and taxes customs.
if you are using usps make sure you get the tracking number and I would definitely pay for Insurance if the laptop is 300 insured for 500.
    Good luck bud

If you got it delivered by usps, your country custom officer will call you by phone informing you the custom duties charges for it, and you will have to pay for that when they deliver to your doorstep. If they can't confirm this by reaching you on phone with you agreeing to custom charges, they will return the parcel back to it's origin.

Im not in india but most of the time when I was purchasing shit from ebay coming from the US it cost me around 18%, sometimes nothing for items less than $100 and this one time they even charged me 37%. You never know, best bet is to tell him to lower the value because he's your brother and not just some company who can say no.

there will be chipping charges applicable for the goods, i think you should ise iccworld.com it charges all inclusive along with shipping charges so there will be no further charges involved, i have imported $2000 speakers using them without any problems. There are also other services available just look out for them..
