I'm trying to build an online news website/blog and possibly monetize it. Right now I'm focused on creating quality content and creating an organic following.

I'm currently writing all my content, learning as I go. I'm starting to build a social media presence surrounding it, and it's been okay so far- but I need to learn and find out more.

I also don't have a domain name yet or web-hosting. I figured I would at least get a few unique articles pumped out before I do that. But for now you can see my website for what it is.

    https://realpolitiknewscom.wordpress.com/

Pls no bully. But do tell how I can improve/what more I can do to enhance it. I know that things will be easier once I get a domain and web hosting for it.
Can anyone by chance recommend the best webhosting site, and especially for a news site?

How can I potentially monetize my website? I'm willing to work hard in order to see the results, but I just need a push in the general direction.

Would really help if I got in contact with someone operating news websites/blogs etc

    Skype: fight_with_tools

Otherwise, just leave your much appreciated comments/thoughts/advice here
    Thank you very very much!

So you're running a news site. I like the effort you've put into the content, but you'll definitely need to put more work into appearing legit. You're probably pitching your content to more and more social media and sharing sites eventually, you're going to need a better looking site.

Invest into a domain right away. You can get <1$ domains for the first time from many providers. Hosting can get pretty cheap too - a few bucks a month from a small plan. It's crap, but it's better than what you have now.

Site looks kinda crappy TBH. It's not terrible, but it's screaming "teenager running a blog" to me. Invest fifty bucks in a theme from themeforest (Newspaper is good) or just find a nulled one for free (don't forget to scan it).

Are those images stock free? Be careful with images if you plan to monetize your site.

What is your marketing plan? Which networks do you plan to prioritize to reach your audience?

As far as monetization goes, you have a million options. I wouldn't even concern myself with that for now. They're crawling all over like cockroaches and a quick google search will give you a list of good and reliable options.

You will need a team, and you will need to write quality content every single day if you want to be included. You can't copy and re-do anymore - this died a few years ago (friend making silly money re adsense). Therefore you have to create unique content and copy - something that the other news site would actually share.

And yes, it's pretty hard to monetize unless you have huge Impressions or are so niche you can sell advertorials etc.

If you are a rogue news reporter or a stand alone news writer, just forget about the news website. You can't fighht the big players will vast resources.

If you are really passionate about, then go for Investigative journalism. Create a blog for it and start doing investigations and findings.

In this way, the big news websites will actually share your findings. Just pick a niche... a news niche ;)

I disagree. The internet is an open field; any idiot can grow a FB group to 500k likes organically with some effort, and just use it to spam clickbait-y articles. I can't remember how many "news" sites I've started these past two years. It's the easiest way to make money. Which is probably why we have so many garbage "news" sites nowadays.

I digress. Once you've gotten the reach through clickbait, slowly start dishing out more "reputable" content and eventually find your own reddit echo chamber where you can publish your stuff

Well, I don't think I'll be covering THAT kind of news. I guess it's more blogging than reporting because I'll be the one writing about the news development and analyse it for my visitors.

Thanks for the reply. I actually do create my own content and don't copy anything word for word. I might at times do I guess what you would call press releases (relatively new to the term so I'm not sure if I'm using it correctly in this context), like where you pick up a news story and paraphrase it, except I would do so with the added benefit of setting the tone to match my sort of brand.

    Thanks for your replies!

I appreciate your input in the last reply. You're absolutely right, it does give off that air- i will improve the look for sure, it's just right now i'm dipping my toes in the water to test out a few things (the theme and layout of the blog is one of them, hell it was a free theme anyway :)

I give credit to wherever I pick out my images from on the site itself. Not sure how I can do that with the featured images tho.

I plan on marketing it to just genuine viewers. So on facebook and social media like reddit starting out. I already have a micro success story from last night where I posted my article to a 80K member FB group related to my niche, and it got over 125 likes and some shares, which shot up my page visits to my blog exponentially (if only by 150 visits). So there's definite potential in that I think.

Do you have any personal recommendations on which services to use to set up domain + hosting? I want to be sure I'm using the best one for people like me who want to do a site like I'm doing.

And lastly, I'm getting some conflicting bits of information from this thread about being able to potentially monetize my news blog/site. Could you possible elaborate on some methods you had in mind?

    Thanks again!

I've done this before and sold - monetizing it very difficult. Just to keep you in the loop. An ad sales person buys via impressions, in a niche you can get away with advertorials and sponsorship etc.

Depends how far you want to go with the clickbait and what type of news website you looking for.

If you want quality, as OP mentioned, why think about clickbait?

Crediting is sadly not enough, unless the image is clearly open to the public. Trust me when I say that so many lawsuits get flinged on a daily basis, it's best to steer clear from images that could be licensed, especially from other news sites. Especially if your site is political. A lot of ad networks will refuse to work with you at best, you'll get sued at worst.

Reuters charges up to several hundred bucks per image, and they're very jealous when it comes to people using those for free. All reputable media sources buy theirs from them.

PM me and I'll give you a detailed list of sources that I've been using for years - these are public domain, meaning that you can legally use them on your site. Thankfully there are a lot of these out there and you won't run out of material quickly.
I've had some bad experiences with several hosts. Dreamhost is what I use and they're excellent. Pretty cheap (I think it's fifty bucks for 1 year upfront, you get a free domain thrown in). I have never experienced any downtime and their support will help you with nearly anything. Their more advanced plans (you'll need those once you grow) are affordable as well.

Even CNN uses clickbait nowadays. There are no reputable online media sources nowadays

Slap ads on it. Find a good ad network that's willing to work with your content (you can just look for similar sites and see who delivers their ad content). Target T1 countries, USA, UK, Canada, basically the developed world, with you pages and promotions (otherwise you won't make a penny)

I have a news site or two that I work on a regular basis and would like to make some suggestions for you.

    1) Get a domain that has some backlinks in place - strong ones at that. It is hard to rank with a domain that has no historical links and you are going to want to rank.
    2) Share your stories in social media. Everytime. You. Post One. You want some traffic from there and it will help you in your authority.
    3) Use images from Google images. Look at the pic below to see how you can do that with no issues at all.
    4) Write a story and immediately submit it to Google to index.
    5) You need to add to it every day several times a day if you want to really make it work. Use Dragon if you are tired of typing but you absolutely have to add to it daily. Even when you don't feel like writing.
    6) Play with your monetization methods and actually change them up on a semi regular basis. People can easily go ad blind on a news site so you need to mix things up there.
    7) Change the theme, or at least the theme colors or layout, periodically as well. If you don't it looks a little stagnant.

Here's the pic for your image use and best of luck to you in this!

Wow thank you very much for your input. That reuse function in google images can come in handy!
It's a bit too late for me with picking a domain name that has backlinks. BUT, I did chose my domain to have a somewhat relative keyword in it that relates to what I post about.

The domain deal will just slow you up some - it's not a game killer so you'll be fine there. Just backlink that puppy up as you move along and backlink the story pages and not the root url so much.

Space out your content during the day too... I usually write very early in the AM and set things up to post during the day so it appears as if I am at it hard. If you don't have time to write some days, be sure to get a writer that can help out now and then for you as you need consistency.

Yeah, that sounds like the smartest way about doing it. I'm doing this mostly cause I already have a somewhat grasp on the way news and buzz works.

Also I forgot to mention, JESUS does that say you're getting 1.5 million visitors/views a month?!?!?! How long did it take you to get to there?

That is the search volume for the KW shoes, not my site.

You'll easily get 20K in a day on a good story if it hits in lots of verticals in the news niche. That's what makes a "little guy" news site so valuable as you can get a story go wild and get all kinds of traffic to just one post.

I wrote one yesterday that was #3 in Google in just a few hours without any backlinks; searches were just over 600K but that is fine by me as I got pounded fast. It's dropped to #7 today as is the nature of the game in the news site niche.

I'm looking for those sorts of numbers. I'll tell you hwhat though. I wrote article reiterating a news development and posted it on one measly social media group and it got me over 250 hits. It was just a trial run, but man was that figure promising. It was also after just my 2nd day
