I want to start producing high quality, 1080p videos in which people see my desktop and hear me talking.
What are your best ideas to get started? What tools do you recommend for recording, editing, graphics etc?

There are many desktop screen capture software available for purchase online. Most of the free desktop capture software is not worth dealing with as the video quality is so bad.

For recording I'd recommend Camtasia Studio 8. It's easy to use and has high quality compared to other recording programs. For editing, assuming you do not want to add a lot of effects, you could use Sony Vegas Pro 12. You can learn very quickly how to use it. If however, you want a more advanced program you could use Adobe Premier Pro CS6 or Adobe After Effects CS 6. Those programs are a bit more difficult, so I recommend you to start with Sony Vegas. There are also a few things you have to think about. How do you get the programs? Well, you can get them for free by downloading and cracking it. It's not necessary to talk about that on this forum, because a simple search on YouTube will do fine. Also, if you want to get 1080p videos, you have to set the resolution of your monitor to 1920x1080.

So basically do some research on the internet and remember that cracking software is easy. If you are successful in the future you could pay for the software then.

I recommend camtasia studio as it is one of the best programs out there. You also require a clear mic which can be purchased near an electronic store near you.

Don't forget an import cog in your endeavor, you can have all the latest and greatest but you need to consider your target audience and their ability to view your work.. no bandwidth and people switch off very quick..

if this is an all dvd projects(dv source and dv project setting),export to DV-AVI should be done at least as your edit master.
The mainconcept Mpeg2 codec that came with premier 6.5 was an early version 1.x adobe offeered an update and then another as beta.i'd have to research the version numbers but you would be better off to use a later generation Mpeg2 encoder from your DV-AVI edit master file.for 68 minutes, you could encode Mpeg2 at CBR 8700 kbps,224 kbps audio for very good quality.

A good usb mic like the Yeti, if you have the budget, works well. Camtasia also works best for screen capture. If you're on a mac, you can do something similar with grabberaster-to forward the video to quicktime to record. That's a little bit cheaper, but you'll still need a microphone, and a better quality mic will equal better overall quality in video.

Camtasia Studio 8 is my favorite software.
    My best advise.
    1. Don't play music in the background. We don't care about your favorite song.
    2. Don't whisper into the microphone. There are some good videos that people can't use because you can't hear the speaker.
    3. Be prepared, stop recording if something that takes a long time and come back.

Agree with Blanks. Camtasia Studio is the best tool for record desktop. I've never had any problem with it.

If you want to do your own custom animations, I recommend doing them in Flash and then merging the result into your production video. You'd be amazed at how frequently Flash is used in network television for on-screen graphics and transitions. I guess it's just too easy to do scripted animations that looks convincing.

Add to the video editing software a good sound editing program like Audacity or sound Forge. This way you can edit the sound and the video to match your objectives.

If you find that you have some background humming or noise , you can always split the audio off the video with Audacity and use some plugins to "clean up" the noise. Also I find that headset usb mics work better than desktop mics.. for some reason. (like the mic connected to a pair of headphones)
