hey there guys. Thanks to BHW I have the cash to buy myself a laptop. Since I am only 19 and my parents take care of me they pay half the amount. I disclose only half the income I earn from IM to them so they are willing coz they don't know that I have more than enough to buy myself 2 good laptops. Enough said.

Please suggest a good laptop model or the minimum configurations that I should look for. My budget is $900 and I'm in INDIA so laptops are marginally cheaper in here than in the US I guess.

Please suggest configs and model, brand anything...

    Thanks in advance

    Hi buddy,

Even I am from India :) I am 17 ... (Sh... I use 18 everywhere on the forum shh..)

I would like to tell you my views, first, what I think is laptops are not cheaper in India. They are cheaper in USA.

I myself have brought a Dell Studio XPS 1640, it will cost you around $1500.

    $900 = Around Rs 40k to 45k

You can take a look at HP. They have a laptop in the similar range and it has 3Gb ram, around 160 Gb hard disk....

If you just want to do IM work, like sending emails, making ebook, and stuff like this, then 1GB Ram, 160 Hard disk 5400 RPM (May be 5200..not sure), Intel 2.0 Ghz DC2 would be enough ...

    ....

I work on laptops all the time (IT Tech) probably the best laptop i have used and the most realiable is the IMB SL series. I actually bought me an IBM SL500 with 4gigs of ram because i was so impressed with them. Of course i got it fairly cheap from my distrubtor. Non the less worth the money at a retail price of about 1000 to 1200

If you want to use the laptop for IM then the configuration is really not that important. Assuming that you don't plan on running programs like Xrumer then the main thing that you need for your IM ventures is a strong internet connection. However, a mainstream laptop should be fine for ya.

IBMs were pretty good, when IBM still made them. I have one over 10 years old that I still use occasionally.

What apps will you be running is the main question. I cant really think of anything that requires the system to be top of the line, just go for a mid - range, and tell your parents to give the rest of the money to me.

I was never a big fan of Dell but since they bought out Alienware the Dell XPS line is amazing. XPS is actually an Alienware computer I love the xps line and would recommend one to anyone doing IM.

I would say get a customized dell with a 4GB ram and 250 gb hdd and a 9 cell battery. That would increase your efficiency by alot if you use it properly. I am from india myself. I couldn't get the dell cause I got a Sony Vaio NS series notebook for 28k (it's actual cost in the Indian market is 60k). Mine has a 3gb ram so it's pretty good.

A tip. If you go for dell, buy it online. It'll save you 4-5k. Cheers. More so, keep your needs in mind.

I have been very happy with my Dell Precision Latop. It is big bucks, but its a powerhouse with fantastic support if needed.
I am also a big fan of the Lenovo's higher end systems as well as the HP business line. For the most part, stay away from consumer grade stuff!
That said, I bought a netbook about 2 months ago and since then my Dell has remained in its docking station.
Your biggest descision should be in the OS though: Mac? Linux? XP? Vista? 32 or 64 bit? And then choose your hardware to match it. There isn't really any point to getting somethign with XP 32 bit and more than 3GB RAM....

Alien ware is complete shit, i have fixed so many of them things the number 1 thing that goes out are the shitty power supplies that comes with them. I do NOT recommend this. I know dell aquired alienware then you will go on to say "ALIEN WARE is bascially the xps line" Nope its not. Alien ware is way over prices they give you everything in the board and the processor the rest isn't good quality Expecially the cases

I'm a big Dell fan ATM. But, whatever you get get the business line and not the consumer line. They are usually built with higher quality components and built more solidly. Right now, I'm on a Dell Latitude E6400 w/ Vista business. I'm having great luck with it.

    Hi,

Audio quality of studio sucks ... So, if you are not planning to watch movies or listen to music.. Then Studio is a great decision :)
