Ok, so over the last few weeks I've noticed a dramatic decrease in SERPS for a LOT of my targeted keywords. For the life of me I could not figure out what happened until I started looking around the back-end of my websites.

Low and behold I found a link stuffed paragraph that was somehow inserted in to every single site I have just after the body tag.

"As long waits for small personal protection against possible paydayloan2two(dot)com to wait after a huge relief. For people trust into potential sources payday advance payday advance will not every week. Seeking a customer can unsecured and hardship Cash Loan etc. etc. etc."

Somehow they hid this text.. It was a lot... And there was a TON of links.

My question is, would having this hidden spammy text on my sites cause my SERPs to plummet? I'm hoping this is what caused it.. Because now it's fixed and hopefully they recover.

If this did cause the drop in rankings, how long do you think google will see that everything is back to normal and put my site back where it was before?

Any security tips you guys can give me to help prevent this from happening again? I changed pw's to my FTP login and Godaddy account. I've had some freelancers work on my site in the past... Maybe that's where I screwed up.

Sorry if this sounds like a total noob post. I'm just starting out with websites, SEO, etc. and this is the first time I've had something like this happen.

    Thanks!

That very likely caused the ratings drop. If your rankings do not rebound you might want to go thru webmaster tools, explain the situation and ask for a manual revierw, unless your site can't stand this scrutiny.

I'm sure my site is strong enough to rebound. I believe the spammy content was only there for a couple weeks.

Funny thing is, when I first noticed drop in rankings I submitted a reconsideration request to google (just in case) and they came back saying everything was fine.

Any tips on things I should check/make sure of/tools to use to prevent this from happening again? My hosting account is with GoDaddy and all of my sites are Wordpress.

Also, I fetched as Googlebot to try and get it crawled quicker so Google will notice things are back to normal.

Is there anything else I should do to be proactive in regaining SERPS?... Or should I just continue normal link building?

Thanks in advance for any tips and/or advice.
