So I bought a .com blog with GoDaddy a while back and they offered to install wordpress on it for $10.99 and other stuff of that nature which I can obviously do myself. However, they offered to install cPanel for 7.99 a month and I don't actually know whether it is necessary for domain operation (am I just getting a domain name?), whether I can install it without GoDaddy's help, or whether the 7.99 per month is justified.

I've heard of $0.99, $1.99, and $2.99 .com domains and I'm wondering if I've just paid too much for a cPanel that I could have installed myself. Please help.

Do not give them recurring revenue for a one time setup.

The Cpanel side I think is for your DNS settings. It's strange Godaddy are charging for the DNS access (I know some providers charge for this additionally) but never heard of Godaddy charging for it. Add Chrome extension "honey.com" and when you go to checkout of any site it automatically adds a coupon.

I got a .com domain using them for $0.99 recently (with the Cpanel).

yes you are paying more, there are so many hosting companies who are providing cpanel free of cost, why you will pay monthly fee.

If I understand so far, cPanel is a server-sided thing that I cannot just "install afterward" like wordpress, but at the same time the $7.99 is ridiculous. Is that correct?

If that is correct, what (NON affiliated) web hosting do you use to get cheap domains with cPanel?

I don't want any of that though. I just want a cheap .com domain with free cPanel, preferably pay by month.

The correct site is joinhoney.com. It is a good extension like you shared for sure.

Your two cents on this BTB? Do you have a "favorite" web host that you vouch for which gives cPanel free with domain? Something like $1.99 or $2.99 per month?

cPanel is a simple control panel that helps you manage your hosting.

It is ALWAYS a good idea to keep your website register separate and your web hosting company separate.

Always get your domain with a trusted ICANN accredited registrar that has been around for a long time like Godaddy, Namecheap, Dynadot etc.

While get your web hosting from a different provider that specializes in hosting. Don't mix the two.

The reason I say this is because most web hosting companies are not ICANN accredited and are mere resellers for other registrars. These web hosting companies can shut shop anytime.

You don't need much to open a web hosting business - a small to medium VPS and a few dollars as deposit to your resell provider and you are in business. If the business doesn't work, you close shop. Whereas, to become a registrar you have to jump through several hoops and pass multiple verification in order to get ICANN accreditation.

Get your domain from Namecheap - they don't upsell you on anything. Get a simple domain for a discounted price. For hosting, if you're just starting out, go for the likes of Bluehost that are super cheap and are good enough for small sites. When you grow, you jump ship to a bigger provider, that's all.

So from a logistical standpoint, the registrar essentially takes care of the DNS, while the host is the machine with the IP address that the DNS name points to?

So I register a domain through a certified registrar, get a host, and then use the registrars user inferface to route the domain name toward the web hosting server's IP?

I don't host my sites where I buy my domains. I also rarely use Godaddy for domains but I do have a handful there as a couple were bought there when I was greener than springtime grass and a few are registered there as I bought out services or sites.

I prefer Internetbs for my domain purchases and use inmotion, powerup, hostnine and a few others to host my sites.

Paying $7.99/month is only justified if you are using a virtual server for which you need a separate virtual server cPanel license. If they offered this on their shared hosting plan, it's overcharging because it's more or less free for them. They only have to pay for one license and this license can be used for a lot of shared hosting accounts because all these clients share the same IP.

My advice: Use their $0.99 domain promo code if you're not going to violate any American laws. And buy your hosting somewhere else.
