I sort of took in an abandoned dog today

I was planning on doing so much writing and other internet stuff today, those plans got changed fast.

Around 10:00 my girlfriend's brother comes over to my house, we go outside and what appears to be a box is in the parking lot of the high school across the street. I took a closer look, and it wasn't a box, it was a dog. I go over there and take a look at it and its not moving much, shaking like crazy, and looked pretty sickly.

I thought "what the hell" and grabbed some ham from inside to see if she would eat it, to my surprise, she gobbled it down like she hadn't eaten in days. My girlfriend brought out more ham, she ate it, so now I've got no ham in my house lol.

Anyways we bring her into my yard and kind of check her over, aside from her shaking, it doesn't look like she has anything seriously wrong with her, except maybe a cataract in one eye. We did a few tests, and determined it was almost completely blind and pretty deaf. I debated calling animal control or the vet. I chose to call the vet.

    dogsmall.jpg

At the vet, she tells me its got cataracts in both eyes, pretty much completely deaf (if you make a very loud noise, she will pop up) and she is leaking urine. Then she estimates it to be 8-10 years old, and says since you can see a very clearly defined collar mark, she was spayed, and had damn near perfect teeth, her guess is that someone just dropped her off at the parking lot and drove away, not wanting to take care of her anymore.

Then she asked if we were going to keep it, I look at my gf, she looks at me and says "you know its your choice" so I said "yeah let's keep her". The vet gave her a bath, gave us some prednizone for it, and a sample box of Frontline.

We brought her back home and my gf ran out and got some food and treats for her, which she loves. We also got her puppy training pads so she can lay there without peeing all over our carpet in her sleep. Monday we're calling the vet back and getting medicine for either a UT infection, or incontinence.

After a few hours of playing with her, mainly rubbing her belly, and letting her run around outside, my gf got a collar and leash for it so it doesn't kind of wander off like it has been doing outside.

I'm not a big fan of turquoise, but that's what you get for letting your gf pick out the collar. She isn't biting at it at all, and last time she went outside, she pooped, so she is obviously house broken.

It just makes me so mad that someone would just leave this dog in a parking lot because she probably became inconvenient for them.

If you return the dog to her owner that would be the right thing! :)

I am pretty sure the owner abandoned her, the collar mark is clear as day, and that dog wouldn't wander too far from anywhere being blind and deaf.

We've got the new collar on her and it doesn't bother her a bit, she hasn't tried to chew at it once, she's obviously used to having a collar so I doubt she'd have tried chewing off her old one.

I'll keep an eye out for lost and found posters and the vet said she'd put a picture of it up for the county humane society site for lost and found dogs, but I'd bet my bottom dollar her previous owners never wanted to see her again.

Good thing you found her not someone who would abuse her.

I took in a few stray cat's over the years. I'm glad that you took in the animal, even if it was someone else's, it will be in the paper or fliers will be posted. But even if it is someone else's, I'm sure they will be more than grateful knowing that it was in your home instead of wandering the streets and potentially being hit by a car.

Hats off to you Sir! I also don't believe how people abandon their pets like this when it becomes inconvenient. I live in India where I see a lot of pedigree dogs abandoned on the streets, once they become old. It looks so sad because they are not very street smart like the street dogs. They just sit around politely, hoping that someone will give them some food.

If I ever catch a family or person abandoning their pet on the streets, I will break every window of their car or whatever they are traveling in. I wouldn't mind going to jail for doing something like that.

We have a cat in our home that we took in about 11 years ago. It was actually a newborn when we found it. It got dropped by a crow that was taking it to have dinner. That cat is like a family member now. It has started to become sick and throws up and creates messes around the house. We just clean it up. It can get frustrating at times although it has NEVER occurred to us to throw her out.

Like someone else has said here, the world needs more people like you. Thanks

I took a picture of her a few minutes ago, I tried to halfway cover the flash on my phone, but it ended up waking her up anyway, I'm pretty sure she can still tell light and dark, she just can't tell much else other than that.

All I can say is wow! What an awesome person you are and I really respect what you did there. I love animals (I have a dog and cat) and I can never imagine just leaving them. It's a life long commitment when you get a pet and you have to realize that there will be ups and downs. It's really amazing what you did!

    Very nice of you, man.

My little guy is blind as well, has been since he was 6 months or so, he's 12 this year - started loosing his smell a little lately; he has epileptic fits every so often too; they last ages - he's a trooper though!

Nice work man :) I love it when people are good to animals, having dogs myself I would take in an abandoned dog any day. It's freaking me out how many people are mean to animals and wish I could simply give them all back their own medicine...

Tip on the hat my friend!

    P.S: Very cute btw :)

You reminded me of what happened about 7 months ago, when I was going to work early morning and mom came and said there is a small dog in the park nearby, I already have a German Shepherd so I love dogs, so I told her I will go to check it out.

I went there and saw a little puppy shaking, I couldn't resist, I brought him home and covered him with a blanket. Then I gave him some food and then went to work.
    This is his first day

I called him Sparky, because he was too active. He would always fight with my dog, so then I called many friends to see if anyone wants a dog and luckily one of my best friends said yes, and I was sure that he was going to take good care of him so I gave it to him. We built a nice house for him and got him vaccinated.

    Today? There you go:

But he didn't see me for a long time, so he doesn't recognize me now and I am a stranger to him now. But I am glad that I saved a dog. I love dogs.

Well done OP, and sorry for the long reply, just had the same case as yours and I wanted to share :)
