I rank #1 for a keyword that receives 50k searches a month... and get 10 hits a day. Why?

So, this is not an isolated incident. I have DOZENS of sites that rank in the top 3 spots for keywords that are supposed to get very high searches per month.

This one site I am referring to in the title of this post is targeting a keyword that, according to the Google Keyword Tool in EXACT MATCH mode, receives 49,500 searches a month. Consistently. Like, even the search volume trends are consistent from month to month. EXACT MATCH TYPE.

But this site receives about 10 hits per day, or less.

So why does this happen? It's happening with dozens of my sites. In fact, it's basically all of my sites.

The adwords external tool is not accurate for a lot of organic search results.

No no, I'm not logged into gmail or adsense or anything like that.

I must just be picking worthless keywords that the keyword tool is lying about.

I would try clearing your cookies/cache and then see if you still rank for it. Or are you using something like market samurai to check?

I have several #1 spots for keywords around that range and get 10 - 15 per day, but the CTR is very good.

Strange thing is, I have many that are in the #2 all the way to #15 and some of them have less searche sper month BUT get MORE traffic ... one site gets 40 / avg per day uniques, but the CTR isnt nearly as good and I cant get the highest paying ads on it..

I always looked at this way but could be wrong (as is the case a lot of the time lol):

That 50,000 searches per month are divided between the top (x) amount of top (x) of URLS in G00gl3 ... where (x) is a number only known by G00gl3 ...

If you figure out more let us know.

OK, I've been noticing the same thing too. I've built a bunch of niche (1) keyword specific sites that were based on EXACT searches from Google. I use the exact same template for everything, same variation on the Title tags and descriptions. At this point my minimum is 12,000 searches a month, recently I've been building on 25,000 searches a month.

I get a site based on a (Google) keyword that has at least 300 searches a day go to the #1 spot and I get 10 lousy hits. Some sites DO get substantial hits and Google keyword is telling me they only get 100 searches per day.

I am noticing something though - When I started building sites, I was shooting for 100-200 searches a day. After a few months (and many more sites with better searches), my older sites have the most hits. I'm using my adsense impressions as my "counter". It SEEMS Google is "shaving" impressions on my newer sites, and rewards the ones that are older.

It just seems the older the domain is, the better it does. I dunno if Yahoo and Bing is making up the different or what. I've got to dig deeper into the analytics and webmaster tools.

Exactly try wordtracker keyword tool.with adwords keyword tool for eg if you have a search term 'keyword1 keyword2"
it will add up individually the "keyword1" search per months+"keyword2" search per month and gives a false result.Even I experienced the same,Can someone confirm if this is true or not?
which is the best keyword tool available which gives the most accurate info?

because those 50k are for the keyword + all the long tails that it's not showing.

also, you may be rank 1 in your local datacentre, not the rest of the country and internationally.

Where are you from? It could be 1st in your country, but not in US or other countries that search for your keyword

most likely you are currently ranking 1 for your local search, but down further for your global.

as you age your global ranking will improve.

another note: if your web site does not convert to the adsense advertisers your site will dip slightly and never be number 1.

Search for it through a proxy or get someone else to search it for you and see where you're ranked.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Turns out I am not #1 across the globe.

Had a guy in Argentina check for me with Google in USA search mode, and I was at #7. And I also just checked google with a proxy site, and it had me at #10.

So maybe I haven't wasted the last 2 years of my life after all... I hope.

I'll have to agree with with the others who brought up market samurai. I was way off target without it and quadrupled my traffic in the first month with it.

I also agree that Market Samurai is a good tool, but even it is not 100% accurate. It's great for finding some niche keywords though.
