Hello BHW i own a celebrity gossip blog. I won't throw out the url because i think that's against the rules. But i have a few questions about what exactly is going on. Well my celebrity gossip blog has over 1,000+ comments. I am trying to figure out if these are real people commenting or if its just people spamming my site to gain backlinks to there site. Will this hurt my site? Should i remove all the comments? If you would like the url to the site pm me. I am in need of some help. Also if anyone can help me out with how to get my celebrity gossip blog out there more i would love to here your suggestions thanks!

Most probably those comments are from scrapebox.

    Use rel="external nofollow"

Grab a copy of scrapebox or search for scrapebox comments and you'll find a list of the generic commments most scrapebox users deploy.

Chances are though, that if there's a link... it's spam from one of the various blackhat forum spammers.

That's the problem with a generic comments section. You get swamped with bots placing links and unless you want to read them all your site will start to look really spammy if you keep comments open.

I'd suggest making your own unique comment form so it's harder for programs like scrapebox to submit comments. I made my own for a site and although it doesn't block all the spammers it blocks 90% of them and the other 10% give up once they see I've manually deleted their comment within 48 hours of them posting it. It takes some work but at least you don't look like a spammed up site.

If you're on wordpress, use grownmap anti spam bot plugin. Its better than Akismet. Meanwhile how do you drive traffic cos I'm in your niche too but I'm sure we are in different countries.

Switch over the Facebook comments. They're hosted in an iframe but there are work arounds to get them to show up for the bots to read for SEO purposes. Plus if your audience is real and is truly as engaged as they appear to be you'll get incoming traffic from facebook since the comments will show up on the newsfeeds of people who are connected to the commenter.

^ facebook comments turn off a lot of my visitors. Getting a good spam-plugin like askimet is essential for Wordpress. Though it does catch out the odd legit comment, so trawl through it manually now and then.

I think your own unique comment form is a great idea because it gives a site even more customization. It also gives the site owner more control as this post mentions. How about adding a basic tutorial or some links to other sources for making one of these comment forms? I'm sure there are plenty of members on this forum who know how to do this. Getting rid of 90% of the comment spammers is definitely worth the extra time needed to create this kind of comment form. After it's finished and added, the only maintenance needed is to keep that 10% out of the comment section.

If there are links in the comments or they look spunned, they can be spam.

What I do is turn off the link area in the comments (users can't leave a website in the comments).
