Does anyone know the legalities of posting a bottle of rum to a friend in the US from Australia? This particular rocket fuel isn't available in the US.

The duties are extremely HIGH on Alcohol. I remember bottles of absolute at the LAX, the duty tax cost more than the bottle, of course that was 13 years ago. I traveled to australia a few times, thats how I know.

You could send it, but I do believe the person picking it up would have to pay the fees. just don't lie and say its something else, in this day and age, you could be picked up as a Terr@rist, if its found, lol.

Hope that helps.

I was aware of the Australian rules, I just don't know about the US rules.

I think it is illegal to ship alcohol in the US. The federal government taxes it, then the individual state taxes it. I would say they both would want their share of taxes.

I do know you can't ship alcohol from state to state in the US.

What is it that you are trying to ship if you don't mind me asking? I am very surprised that you can't find it anywhere in the US.

Bundaberg Rum

It's pretty hard to get in the US. It's also regarded by most Australians as elixir of the gods.

I am not sure about all the laws in the US but generally there is no problem having wine etc shipped to a US address so this shouldn't be a problem either (as long as the proper paperwork is filled out). I think it would be cheapest if your friend went to a local liquor store (a bigger one) and asked them to ship it for him. Since it is a well known brand and not an obscure vintage wine that you can only get at auction, they should not have a problem sourcing it. The only issue might be that he has to order a case of it.

shipping to us i have no clue but haveing it sent to me here in afghanistan i have someone put it in coke bottles with coke in it and ship to me all ready mixed :P

so how does liqure barn get all of its alchahol? :p it would suck to only be able to drink local made liqure.

you can ship it. go to a liqure store and ask them how to send it.

Hey - Dead Eyes give Fed Ex a ring - pretty sure they would know the ins and outs.

hah i cant believe anyone would want to get hold of that stuff!! Holy shit when i was travelling i had some messy nights in Bundaberg (nothing to do there but get smashed :D)

i know this is completely off subject but next time you see a FEDEX truck look at the logo especially at the EX part of it and see if you can see a white arrow, once you see the arrow you will see it EVERY time you see the trucks - it keeps driving me to distraction now... not good when your driving!!! :)

they run a liqour busines, have licenses to do so, and to buy and ship it and have all their paper work in order.

its probaly not allowed to put a botle in a box and drop it at the post office with a few stamps on it.

there is a difference ;)

I'd say just wrap it up and mail it and say its a sweater. See if it makes it. Ask a UPS worker what a shipping hub smells like in summer.

if they person in the US is compensating your investment, just try it. Make sure its wrapped up nice.

Anyone know about sending booze from US to the UK? i might order some everclear for new years, but not sure if it'd be allowed!

If you are near a US military installation and know someone there who is coming home for the holidays maybe you can wrap it up and give it to them to mail when they arrive in the US. That's if that military member is taking a hop on a military transport. This was years ago so I'm not sure how they check today. I guess after 911 they probably check every transcontinental flight including military. Just an idea!!

Q: Do I have to pay any taxes?

A: You must pay Federal Alcohol Excise Tax on beverage alcohol products when you remove them from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) port of entry. Contact CBP for information on filing and paying taxes and any applicable duties on imported beverage alcohol products.

Q: Must I have my product's label approved before I may distribute it in the United States?

A: Yes. The Federal Alcohol Administration Act requires importers of beverage alcohol products to obtain certificates of label approval or certificates of exemption from label approval (COLAs) for most beverage alcohol products prior to introducing them into interstate commerce in order to ensure that products are labeled according to Federal laws and regulations. You must also complete and file a pre-import application to ensure proper tax classification and that the products are manufactured according to Federal laws and regulations. The Advertising, Labeling, and Formulation Division customer service team will assist you with questions on labels and formulation. The toll-free number is 1-866-927-ALFD (2533).

Q: Do I need to obtain a local or State license to conduct business?

A: Yes. You must meet State requirements in addition to Federal permit requirements. You must contact each State for information regarding its licensing requirements. Please click here for a directory of State liquor control boards.
I don't know howdoyou. Do you maybe think the US federal government and the US state governments might have a problem with importing alcohol into their markets without the correct tax stamps? I think they would. I live on the border between two states. If I purchase alcohol in my neighboring state and bring it to my state, it is considered 'bootlegging'. It is a chargeable offense to do it.

If you don't believe me, brew your own liquor and sell it. I bet they will come knocking shortly. Actually, they probably wont knock. They really don't have that much patience.
