HI.. your english would need to be at part with native speakers; no compromise there.

Writing an academic paper can be ten times as time consuming as writing SEO content as you need to do a lot of research. But, registering on online libraries like Questia, you could easily find a lot of information. However, be wary on plagiarism though, one instance of plagiarism and you'd be kicked out.

There are lot of freelance writing sites which are paying for writing articles. Text broker is my favorite, but the only condition with them is that they accept only US citizens or residents since we need to show them the tax returns ,ssn etc.
Otherwise you can write articels to people and they will pay you and in turn they will post on websites for their needs. I have been making money by writing articles only apart from forums. that is a good amount, i already have $90 needed to cash out, i am just waiting to reach 100.

I am an article writer hailing from the sunny island of Singapore. It's been my lifelong dream to be a writer and to earn my living of my laptop. I've been lurking around here for a couple of months but now I am ready for my first plungue into Internet Marketing and out of all of the earning methodology out here on BHW I feel like I am more suited to article writing. I'm a computer science graduate who would love to earn a few bucks with writing articles. I consider my English to be nearly perfect (I'm from Belgium but I read/speak English about 50 percent of the time) and I love writing. Since I'm just starting, the price-per-word will be quite low.

You can check out freelance sites like oDesk, Elance, Freelancer, FreelanceWriting, to mention a few.
You can do better than $20 a day (you can charge $20 an hour), believe me.
Been there, done that. It's financially gratifying. : )

Being a newcomer is never a hindrance for you to receive good pay from clients. There are clients who are very much willing to work with anyone regardless of experience -- as long as you will deliver them quality services.

If you think you lack experience, there are so many ways to build your expertise online (eg, create and post blog articles on article sites). Eventually, this could become your online portfolio.

Secondly, clients are not the ones who decide how much pay you are supposed to get. You are the one who will quote. Although of course, there are so many important things to consider when quoting:

a) how much time is necessary to complete the project
b) how much effort you will be putting on that project (eg, research)
c) expenses (eg, your internet expense, telephone calls, printing materials)

Your quote can be per hour, per word, per article, per project. You can decide if want your compensation in hourly or fixed rate. (Personally, I prefer fixed rate.)

The hardest part of becoming a freelancer is quoting. There are clients who turn away immediately once they'll know you are expensive. But, you should master the "art of quoting." The important thing here is that you and your client will meet halfway (win-win situation).

I joined elance and applied for a few jobs. It seems like almost all of the competion is companies or extremely experienced people. I also have the impression that some of the lowest bids are really ridiculously low. For example 50$ to create content for a website of 12 pages. My asking price is always below the lowest price so hopefully I'll get an opportunity soon

I would recommend The Content Authority as another alternative to some of the more well-known content companies. Every writer starts at the lowest pay grade, but you are bumped up to Tiers 2 and 3 fairly quickly if you follow clients' instructions and submit error-free work. One thing to note is their article time limits. You have eight hours to complete each article, and the site can automatically log you out without saving your work if you take longer than two or three hours to complete an assignment. Other than that, they are a great company to get started with as a writer.

I request you to please see the dates on which the threads are started. You have commented on many posts the same way.

A simple way to start getting actual clients is through fiverr. People will pay you to do simple articles, tutorials, how-tos, etc for 5 bucks. Its a really simple way to start, but if that doesn't work, then you can just post your skill set on here in different forums.
