Here's the story. A few weeks ago, I made plans with my friends to go on vacation with them. Nothing was finalized until yesterday (Airbnb, location, places to visit). However, on the very same day that I come back, I have a job opportunity. On the day I come back, it will be very late and I will miss this job opportunity. I am not financially stable and would like to get out of this costly trip that is pretty much half of my bank accounts balance. I need any excuse. They will not take simple answers to cancel. Somewhere along the lines of the death card will allow me to cancel but I will not say it is death since I am religious to an extent and believe in good/bad karma. I am Buddhist so this will give me bad karma if I play the death card. Also, they don't care about the job opportunity.

"I was at the bank! I was at the store! I ate bad guacamole and couldn't stop shitting!"

Why don't you just tell them the truth?

If your friend can't understand that you need a job more than you need to dick around with them, they aren't really your friend.

I did a little editing and shortened the post for you... you need new friends.
Haha they're good friends but when it comes to plans, they're extremely stubborn. Trust me, I would've said an easy excuse such as it's a birthday or whatever and they wouldn't care

They've trained you well. Do you fetch the newspaper and bark at the milkman or are you indoors and sterilized?

Ah the old Karma. I know how you feel.

If something good happens to a good person, it's karma.

If something bad happens to a good person, it's just one of those things.

If something bad happens to a bad person, yeah you guessed it, it's that pesky old Karma at work again.

If something good happens to a bad person, yeah that will probably be more down to "just one of those things.

As you can see, karma seems to work in funny ways. As and when it suits.

A little story to show you what real friends do in that situation.

Back in 1988/1989 or something along those lines I played golf with the same 3 guys almost every Saturday and we would periodically take a 4 day weekend and travel somewhere to do a 4 day golf excursion.

We did that 2 or 3 times a year and it cost us somewhere between 1K and 1.5K each.

I lived in New Jersey at the time and we would always go south to Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach and other places that were with driving range.

One time, the day before we were going my friend, Erik, calls me and tells me he can't go as something came up. He still wanted to pay his share but was not able to go.

I said something to the effect, "Forget it, do your deal and we'll be good."

If your friends can't do the same you don't have real life friends but ones that only accept you if you do what they want when they want.

Like @jazzc said, a pair needs to be grown.

they're good friends

No they're not.

If my friend told me they had a job opprotunity and had to cancel on me, I'd be so happy for them, especially if they needed a job.

Then I would call after the interview and ask how it went. Bc I want them to get a job so they can take care of themselves.

And if they got it, I'd take them out for dinner and drinks to celebrate.

Your friends don't care about your employment opprotunities, then they don't care about you or your well being.

I don't understand why your friends wouldn't understand you want the job? Seems important to me.

Saying "I can get a job so I'm not going" would probably work.

lol it's funny cuz it's true.
I'm an asshole and prolly live better than 99% of these people. :D It's mainly because I'm an asshole too. :D

And surely Karma extends to truth telling also? I find that telling the truth makes my life easier. They will also trust you more if you have a reason to not attend but it's not so dramatic.
