Mod - please move this thread if you feel it is in the wrong place.

I have been on BHW for several years now and have learned so much from the community, so I decided it's time to give back. This isn't your typical "make money online" post. There are plenty of those here, so I thought I would offer something different. Sorry if this is sort of a ramble. I didn't really organize my thoughts before posting. I'm just typing as I think.

One of the main reasons many of us decide to get into internet marketing is because we want to make a lot of money and not be tied to a specific location. We would like to travel the world, experience other cultures, and NOT spend the rest of our lives in a cubicle. Well, at least that's why I got into it.

But, did you know that it's relatively easy to make money FROM your traveling? Sure, you could start a travel blog, but there are a million and one of those around. I'm talking about international media sales. First, let me explain how I stumbled into this field and a bit about my background:

Four years ago I had just moved to San Francisco (I'm an American) and it was an awful recession. There were no jobs and I wasn't going to last a month with my savings in such an expensive place. I went to countless interviews for dead-end jobs. Then I saw an ad "Travel the world and meet with international business leaders and top government officials around the world." I thought it was a scam, but I applied and when they called I agreed to an interview. Two weeks later, just as I thought I didn't get the job, they called me and wanted me to fly to Belgium the n ext week to start my training. Since they were paying for my flight and everything and I had just broken up with my long time gf earlier that year I figured I had nothing to lose so I caught a flight to Europe.

After two weeks training, they send me to the Philippines to join the team there. This company had about 20 teams around the world. A "team" is usually one guy and one girl, but there are often teams of 3, especially when there's someone new (like I was). Here's their basic business model: get an attractive girl (usually blonde with big boobs) and a decent looking guy who seems intelligent. Send them to developing countries to sell overpriced advertising. That's it.

People in emerging markets like south east asia, latin america and india tend to look up to and respect people from Europe, the UK and the US (I mean no disrespect to people from these countries, this is just a fact I have witnessed first hand). This makes it relatively easy to sell these people, especially when they have tons of money.

We are in the business of producing "special investment reports" on different emerging markets and selling advitorials. We highlight the investment opportunities for a country, sell advertising to the biggest companies and public sectors within that country, and then we air the program for lots to see. Here's how the process works:
    1. Research a country and come up with a Network Overview. This is an outline (done in excel) that shows the hierarchy of decision makers in a country. At the very top is the president or prime minister (or sultan or king), below them is the minister or secretary of finance, tourism, energy, etc. Then, below each ministry is a list of companies in those industries with the chairman and ceo listed.
    2. The CEO's of the top companies need to do what the ministers whom they answer to tell them. This is especially true in emerging markets (especially those places where corruption is common).
    3. After you do your research, you know who you need to meet with (and you should be staying in the country you're working with by now).
    4. You need to meet with the government people first, BUT you do not want to attempt to meet with the top person (ie. president or ministers) first. This is because you are still new and you will mess up in the beginning. Plus, the more important people want to know who else you already met with. Associations and chambers are good for this. Meet with the association of oil and gas, for example, and then meet with some smaller companies that are a part of that association
    5. The main goal of any meeting is to get a sale. Whether it's a company or the government. The second objective is to get letters from the important people in the government. For example, if you meet the minister of finance, come prepared with 10 letters addressed to the CEO's of the biggest banks in the country. The letter should say something along the lines of, "Dear Mr. XYZ, International Media Inc. is producing a program to air on Fox News for the New York Market highlighting all the opportunities available for foreign direct investment in the Philippines. They need both editorial and commercial support in order to produce this program. Please provide them with your fullest support." Have the minister just sign each letter at the end of the meeting. Usually, the way it works is you offer the minister 15 seconds or 30 seconds of advertising and a couple minutes of editorial (if you're doing a TV production) and ask which they want. Then you tell them the price, which is 30k EUR for 30 seconds (or something expensive around there). A minister will almost never agree to pay for advertising because they know that you need them more than they need you. After they say no, then say, "ok, well, I can still give you a 15 second commercial spot along with an interview if you can sign these 10 letters." If it's a bigger country and you are meeting a more important person, then you will only get one meeting with them and you will need your film crew to be there to film and then aftwards ask them to sign the letters. This is what I did with the minister of tourism in malaysia and she signed without hesitation.
    6. You should also meet with luxury hotel general managers in the very beginning so you can get a nice place to stay for free early on. You just barter with them. Give them free advertising in exchange for letting you stay there (make sure to negotiate so you can also get free meals and laundry service included).
    7. After you meet some key people in the government, start calling and making appointments with CEO's of the companies.
    8. Every meeting you show a 5 minute powerpoint presentation of who you have met and what the production is about. This is the intro.
    9. After the intro comes fact finding/interview. Ask them questions about why they and their companies are so great and what they are doing to support their country.
    10. At the end ask for the sale and quote very high prices (like around 50kUSD or more for a 30 second commercial.)
    11. Have a contract ready for them to sign and insist on getting it signed on the spot rather than later.

You will actually produce this program and air it on the channel you talked about. You need to call the tv company first and confirm that they accept advitorials. Usually they will charge you around 30kUSD to air a 30 minute program 3-5 times at different times of the day. Sooooo, you have around 5 minutes of advertising space available and about 25 minutes of editorial. If you sell the 5 minutes in 30 second blocks for $50k apiece, that comes to a total of $500,000 revenue. Subtract the $30k for airing the program and about another $20k in production costs and that's $450k PROFIT :) I have friends who have produced programs like these that have brought in over $1mil. I did one program in Brunei and I personally brought in $200k USD in only one month. This is very possible to do and not that difficult to start yourself. Each program should take between 3-6 months total to produce (from initial research thru final production). After you do a program or two yourself, then you can hire and train other young recent college grads looking for adventure to do this. This can easily turn into a multimillion dollar business for you.

I know this isn't exactly a blackhat seo method to make money, but with all the bullshit google puts us through, I thought people would enjoy learning about a business that doesn't depend on google at all. I have thought of some ways to incorporate the online marketing aspect to this business. One way is to offer an added benefit. Many of these companies will tell you that they are putting their money into online marketing nowadays, so they don't wanna do tv advertising. That's when you could sell them on yourself as an SEO expert or negotiate so you will work on their facebook page or something as well as the tv advertising all for the same original price quoted. I have also thought about creating some bots to do my lead gen and online research for me. The opportunities are endless, if you just look.

I have traveled to many countries (I think something around 20 or so), mostly in south east asia, and I have met with the top ministers and secretaries in these countries and some of the CEO's from the biggest companies in the world. AMA

Note: I have now settled down in Malaysia. After traveling full time for a while and living in hotels (even thought they are 5-star resorts) gets old and it's nice to settle down. I married a malaysian woman and am just starting a family now. I travel much less now, but I will always travel. My son had traveled to five countries before he turned 1 year old. Traveling will always be a part of me (and I never traveled anywhere until after I graduated college).

suppose, we follow this business model, how easy was it to get in touch with the ministers when you just started your company?

And you know people will be asking what's the name of your company and where to sign up!! It certainly piqued my interest.

Do you fear that one morning you may wake with a scar on your side and two missing kidneys?

well basically you produced the program and had all these works with the company you joined 4 years ago. Question is, if people don't want to join any company and be self-employed, how do they start? They just go away to some random 3rd world country and make interview by themselves? Then how do they contact the tv company? Just find the phone info on the net or something?

I, too, would love to hear the name of this company you are/were a part of! Sounds very interesting. PM me if you don't want to post for the whole internet to see.
A second question; do you think you got your job on the grounds that you are a decent looking, seemingly smart guy, and that you fit the image of respectability in the eyes of these foreign countries?

    Thanks for the great post,
    Art

I knew this would be the first question. I love and hate every place I have been for different reasons. Let me give you two places:
The Philippines and Thailand. First of all, both of these places have amazing beaches and are great destinations for any single western guy because the girls will treat you like a rock star (especially if you're white, and I am, they LOVE white guys).
It's tough to choose one over the other and here's why: The Philippines has better beaches that are less developed and the people speak english. You can still find pristine beaches there where there are no other foreigners and you feel like an explorer discovering new land. BUT their food sucks! Thailand, for this reason alone, has the Philippines beat. Thai food is my personal favorite. If you love spicy food, then you can't go wrong.

It's surprisingly easy!!! Especially for me and my friends who have done the same thing because we all have pictures with other ministers and important people we have met. That's the other thing I forgot to mention: you always need to have a camera (an actual camera, nothing special, but not a cell phone because it would suck to meet a prime minister and then only get a blurry picture because you only had a cell phone).

You just have to call and make appointments. My goal is to make have two meetings per day. You just make enough calls to do this. When you first start, if you call 80-100 people per day (which is very possible), then you will get this no problem.

As I mentioned, though, you can't just go into a country and expect to meet the minister of finance the first week. Meet some other people before you even attempt the really big guys. Then when you call and speak to the secretary, you ask to talk to the minister. Obviously they won't put him on, but then you explain what you're doing and who you have already met. Just be persistent and follow up. If you put 50-60 hours per week into this, then it will pay off.

Yeah, I won't get into the name of my company because it's irrelevant (I'm not hiring), but I will give you the link to the company that hired me. They are always hiring and they have an awesome sales training program.

I just realized I can't post a link, but if you search for media plus applicant the first result is where you should click.
