Early this month, I bought a domain and got permission to use whatever old copy (but not images) from the cached pages I could find. The site ranked #1 for a few decent, keywords but not great keywords and had an average ranking of about 38 over 1001 keywords in total. There are also some great backlinks from some high authority sites.

After looking into some of the pages, I could see why they let it go. The pages weren't designed to sell. The copy did an okay for SEO, but could be improved there as well.

After restoring and optimizing a few pages, I started getting about 1000 visitors a day and was seeing some decent conversions with my affiliate links. I have a site wide plugin to redirect 404 traffic to my home page while I work on optimizing and restoring the rest of the pages. However, a couple days ago, this happened:

In looking into things, it seems that I didn't restore the pages quickly enough, and have lost my ranking for the vast majority of the keywords. I've also experienced about a 50% drop in traffic as well.

The pages that I restored and optimized kept their ranking and are still converting on the traffic they get, but without the extra traffic getting redirect pushed to them I'm losing out on conversions I would otherwise have.

Which leads me to my question: do I restore all the non optimized pages to hopefully get some of the traffic back, and then go through and optimize all the pages? Or would it be better to add the pages back slowly as I reoptimize them?

Any chance you changed WHOIS info on the domain?

Do you mean beyond what typically happens when a domain hanged ownership? When I bought it a while ago it was updated to my information, and I have privacy protection on it.

I can't seem to figure out how to update the picture, but here you go:

If you change for example from a United States address to a Russian one, it can't affect it. Same with turning on whois protection (I think).

Ah, I see what you mean. That shouldn't affect this domain as none of the ranking keywords were location specific.

If I were you, I would get the whole content rewritten plus more and posted with good onpage optimization.

That's my ultimate goal and what I'm working on. All the traffic in the world doesn't help if it's not converting. I just worry that it will be harder to get that traffic back the longer I wait to get the pages relisted

Well, there's nothing wrong with putting all the old content back up and going back to optimize them. That's what you should have done in the first place. The faster you restore them, the faster you regain your rankings and traffic.

The only reason is Google hit your website for spamming post.

That's simply not the case. The site went from a couple hundred posts down to three. The three posts are still getting every bit as much traffic as they were before, but I lost the traffic I was getting from the search traffic for the other posts that I had redirected to my home page

I had the same problem a few days ago. Why? because google started to "stole" all trafic of websites. I was ranked in first 10 and my CTR goes down
