I know I should know, and I feel stupid asking, but can someone give me clue about WIKIs?

OK, I know a little about SEO, and I know what a WIKI site is in the abstract sense (Who hasn't use Wikipedia?).

Before you start tearing me a new one because I do SEO and don't use WIKIs, your point is well taken. I just never really exposed myself to them like I have other aspects of SEO.

My perception of a wiki is that it is a rather plain (as opposed to visually rich) archive of information about a subject, and anyone who is interested in that subject can add to the WIKI.

I wold like to know generally how you use such a site for SEO, what information do you put on one, and if anyone knows why are they so powerful considering the value of article directory links. It seems to me the concept is similar.

For SEO, how do you use a Wiki to promote your properties?

All the searches I have done here bring up plenty of people offering Wiki services, but it seems that what they are and how exactly to use them is common knowledge that I somehow missed.

Looking at this list I see sites that I am a member on some of them that are online communities and forums. Do you just use them for forum links?

Can someone please educate this poor ignorant fool?

You can use wikis for links by dropping your anchor text in random places. That's the gist of it. Nowadays, it's mainly automated by the various tools out there.
