they keep linking to my plumbing site to non existant webpages, bunch of 404s, should i worry?

This is definitely not normal, try to remove these links, so they do not harm your site in the future. Perhaps someone is deliberately placing bad links on your site.

It is not normal for your website to receive such backlinks. It is likely that one of your competitors is intentionally creating them to lower your ranking. You should regularly check and remove any incoming backlinks.
