Link building is blackhat SEO if you build links to manipulate serps.

This indeed is the $100,000 question...I will look at what I have done Post Penguin (very little) and see if this may of caused any problems (highly doubt it).

i used to get more than $5 a day with my 2 year old site til the panda brought his friend penguin and asked $5 for the zoo entrance.. leaving me a measly tax deduction... which is yet to be collected by the IRS...

I kind of agree with this...All link building is black hat...even the so-called "white hat" gurus are black hat, they are just in denial...

I have heard matt cutts say link building should not be automated, if you automate the task, its black hat but if you do it manually it is not, but how the hell does google know one from another...

Google is way ahead of the game. They are able to tell automated link building in many ways, mainly by the pattern in which the back links appear, but the most important of which is the velocity of link building. The drip method may slow down the detection, but not for long. The manual link building process is much more natural and adhoc.

Velocity is how things go viral naturally... so no, you're wrong in so many ways.
There is no difference between a manual web 2.0 and an automated web 2.0 if you create the tools to do it yourself, precisely to your specifications. In fact, my automated building often looks a lot better (because the english grammar is so much better) than the stuff people do manually.
