I just don't understand Google sometimes.
I think there's a few in every one of our niches. Some shitty site with barely any links, and it ranks at the top of the search engines.
I have a new site (though was registered over 10 years ago), I've built a few of really high DA links, my site is a EMD, and I'm ranking around 120 right now.
Now I'm not complaining because my site is new, but this other guy has like 50 incoming links, most are crap links, only a couple are targeting the actual keyword, and here he is in top ten for multiple keywords.
I checked majestic, ahrefs and opensiteexplorer, and all show his links to be around 50, and nothing special.

And what's worse is that the rest in the top ten are all authority sites with only a few links to the actual page, and they're ranking top ten. And here I am busting ass to get there.

    Just venting!

Maybe he's hiding his backlinks from link crawlers.

My guess as to the main reason why he's ranking so high is that he built and optimized his site before ranking in Google got way harder than it used to be. How old is his site?

Agreed! I seen many sites ranking high in Google with the help of crappy and spammy links -- Strange part is, I built one site a one month ago with SAPE links and it's working amazingly, main kw is on the first page at sixth position -- Doesn't matter about what tech are being used, matter is, what is working now and stay for a long time, I guess!

Of course there is, but a good link profile is still what matters the most.

moreover, I think having just very few exact match anchors will benefit rankings instead of hurting them.

I know sites which dont have any backlinks with keywords in them yet they rank for some keywords which have to do with the site's content.
nowadays, less exact anchors is more

He doesn't seemt o have any shady links. Most his links are crap too, directories and the such. He has two good links, rest is garbage. I don't have many links but every single link I have is way better than all of his but one. His site is from 2007. Mine is much older, but just redirected for a long time.

Yeah I'm working on social media, but his doesn't even have many either. Just don't get it.

I think bounce rate has a bigger impact than I would of ever had imagined...I had a large link network pointing to one of my websites, and built some other links, it got to position #1. Months have passed, the large link network has since been discovered by google and the service provider just let the domains expire / took the hosting off, so it no longer has those backlinks...Yet, even with fewer backlinks than competitors, it stays at position #1. People stay on my website, interact with my website, I think that is why it stays there. If I had a crap website, and they left right away, I am sure I would drop in rankings fast.

My guess is that he is hiding his links from a very power network. I've seen this many times in many niches. Some of the more pros rank with 0 backlinks. Go figure.

A noob wouldn't show their backlinks to their competitors for their network to be reported.

Are yo kidding ? google gives a big shit to high da links. youtube has da=100 , but that does not means that a nofollow youtube link will rank me for any thing.

DA/PA. I'm talking articles on popular news sites. Actual links from news stories, not crappy links that get no attention. But that's not the point of my post, it's that his site is crap and ranks.

is you link on the home page ? if not then your link will be on a new standalone page and will not pass any link juice.
it's like building a pr9 web2.0 and that will not pass you link juice of pr 9. you will have to give it some link juice which it will pass to your site.

And about crappy sites. i make crappy site and i might be the owner of that site. so, if you can't out rank me with linkbuilding then stop blaming my crappy site and research on your seo.

There are many other ways to increase your ranking besides link building. He may hide his backlinks from crawlers. That's why you can't see.
But it is true that some sites are getting high ranking in Google with the help of spammy link building. There is always a possibility of getting penalty from Google.

Some sites just don't get penalised. They seem to always evade every algorithm update no matter how spammy their link profiles are. I've watched some spammy sites rank for over a year now without any penalties.

If you have just built new links then you maybe in the sandbox. Keep at it and you should see your rankings rise, although it could take sometime
