I have a client that is buying SEO soon. I have to describe the white hat seo tactics. What should I say?

I dont want to come off as a :liar: but I know they will reject my bid if i start talking black hat.

Soo pretty much anything thats done with a tool will now be done or built/submitted manually ? thats all it really is if you think about it.. right ? Its not the methods per say that google frowns upon, but the volume which it is done at.. and quality of course..

I would not go into much detail... you are not selling "tactics" you are selling rankings.

Just talk about how good your onsite optimization is. Talk about content being king, as well as titles, descriptions, h1's, etc.

depending what you are offering the client you can also talk to them about claiming and optimizing their local business listings, press release, keyword research, and competitive analysis.

I do this all day at my in-house seo job. Most clients wont even know/care about what your doing they just want results. Good luck!

Surely something you're doing is white hat, right?

Talk it up and sound friendly and intelligent. And certainly don't use the phrase "you aren't paying for tactics" - of course they are, you're their representative on the web and your tactics impact your reputation.

If these people are prying to hard, you do have a right to your company's proprietary information though.

What is white hat (rhetorical question)? Considering any link building is against Googles guide lines....

but anyway, create web 2.0s, good blog spots etc. Show your client these type of links, even social...

There is no such things as white hat SEO unless you are talking about onsite optimization.

So talk about onsite optimization, then talk about getting relevant niche-related websites to link back to your site (something the client will have to pay extra for as it can cost quite a bit to buy posts on 'real' sites) and if you want throw in talk about social media volicity (facebook, google+, twitter, etc).

Don't give any real details away about anything, if he wants to learn how to do internet marketing charge him something ridiculous an hour from the moment you open your mouth or tell him to buy a book. As others have said your job is to get them ranking, not to teach them how to not need you in 3 months time.

Thanks everyone. It did help having your input. I feel that most clients will have a hard time wrapping their head around SEO anyways.

If I sit down to educate them they wont understand everything.

They already see the value as they have ASKED me for a quote on SEO.

I sent in a response and quote already so they are fine with my pricing.

I agree that specific tactics shouldn't be shared but this company is trustworthy as I have done business with them already.

This seo contract will be good for six months.

I am adding in my experience, proven results, general research information to overwhelm them with numbers (muahahah).

I know I will land this as....I am an .......... Executive Closer!

I will let everyone know what happens but feel free to add to this conversation about what we should report to clients about when trying to land a white hat SEO gig (or actually gray hat).

ps I need great American based copywriters for this position. If you would like to be considered PM me, I pay very well.

what do YOU outsource, what should i say to this ?

Like any company, Sir, I hire people to do a variety of tasks. Unlike a lot of businesses I hire people that do not come into my office on a daily basis and many of those people are not even in my country.

We outsource different things at different times in order to get a well balanced SEO campaign that will withstand all the changes in the algorithms that take place at various times in the search engines.

We typically give them a general task and the task gets completed with a bit of a twist on their end which leaves no footprint for the search engines to see and gives us an SEO infrastructure that is unique to your business.

So right. Clients don't really care about tactics, they care more about rankings. Also, there's such a thin line between white and black hat, so you can't totally promise to not do white/black hat seo.

Napoleon Hill said it best.... You must surround yourself with people and create a super committee to help succeed in life.

We tend to be one man army's with IM but really the true leaders find good friends and business associates to communicate with on a regular basis.

I have already put together 100+ pages of supporting documentation for these projects. SEO is only a fraction of what I will be doing.

Don't tell how you do that, but give them idea on how you can help their business/site rank and drive more clients to them. If they are non-technical persons, they would hate listening to strategies (they like to hear results). If they are techy persons, just tell them what are your strategies-you can't keep them away for much time.

Onsite optimization is white hat, social bookmarketing is white hat. If you don't know what to say, go to DigitalPoint and check what these marketers are talking about

Talk to them about managing their social accounts.

Creating quality content both on and offsite, tell them that you will engage in guest bloging and create excellent linkbait content that other sites will find that interesting they will build natural links to your content.

You social campaigns will rocket because your content will be promoted because it is that interesting

You will gain hundreds even thousands of natural backlinks because your content is so informative and impressive.

You will create widgets, downloads, whitepapers and infographs that are either visual stunning or extremely interesting and informative and people will distribute and link to them for you.

You will create tools that people can install on their site with a link back to you.

This is what you can tell them you will do.

now you tell them that this will cost them £5000 per month and watch their reaction.

now tell them that you can replicate this in as natural way as possible and it will only cost £x per month.

see what their reaction is and let them choose.

Thats what i do, works for me and they make the decision, if they get into trouble with google you have given them the options and let them choose their path.

In my opinion there is no such thing as whitehat and blackhat there are simply people on the first page and people who are not.

    which one are you?

Bravo, I pulled something from this. I focused on the..."You will gain hundreds even thousands of natural backlinks because your content is so informative and impressive."

We not only create content that works for SEO but we create content specifically generated to be dynamic and interesting to capture the interest of people to spread it FOR you.

try to say as few words as you can, the most you said, the most things to argue against it
