I have used to use sub domains to host the "blogs" of e-commerce websites.

If I had a choice to change them back to sub folders, I would.

The main benefit of using a sub domain is that you don't have KW cannibalisation, in that your main e-commerce ranking pages for KW terms are not competing against your blog article pages.

I also found that when a slightly thinner e-commerce site which incurred a panda penalty and lost traffic, the blog began to rank fantastic, and gained some great rankings for the KW's, which helped keep traffic flow while the main site recovered.

However obviously if the blog had been on the main site in the first place it wouldn't have gained the penalty!

So in my situation, I would use a sub-folder, and just make sure that the titles are not exact match KW's that other pages are competing for, and that they always link back to the relevant pages you want to rank for.

Well it is okay if you own that domain name. In case that domain name is not yours and the owner will delete your dns record.
