I recently got laid off as a full-stack developer for an online e-commerce site that went out of business (think Overstock or Wayfair, but much smaller). I ended up buying the email list for next to nothing, and am trying to think of how to monetize it.

What are some options? What is my best bet? Where do I start?

    Global economy melt down...sorry mate.

Just create a web 2.0 landing page related to shopping online or mystery shopping as the case maybe with an offer/review of products(s) from any of these famous CPA networks . Write a compelling email sales letter of not more than 300 words or less and send to your email list which is to pre sale your landing page. Boom money in the bank ...if you did well.

Search this forum for tools to help you, literally here has an endless source of it. Myself have gathered 103+ and counting since joining this August.

    Stay safe...

    Thanks, guys.

Does anyone know how I can send 2.5M emails and get inboxed, avoiding spam filters? I also want to send it all at once, not having to send bursts every few days because I've reached limits. Thoughts?

There are many ways to monetize. You can rent the emails, make your own ecommerce shop, promote a CPA offer, etc. The possibilities are endless

Message me for details The list is 65-70% female, as the previous company was catered towards then. You could also create a custom audience in FB to get gender, age, state, etc.

Oh, be very, very careful here. You're practically giving a resource that can generate a lot of money to blackhatters. There's a risk your list will be useless if you're not careful enough.

Do NOT send out a blast of 2.5m at once. This will leave you no way to optimize. Start small.

Set up three different landingpages, with three different products.
Send these to 10.000 emails each (with something like Mailchimp).

Compare opening rate, click rate and of course conversion rate.
Find your winner. Optimize the shit out of it.

Now - that you know the product you're going to push, start over.
Set up three different email structures (titles, body, sender), and send to 10.000 each.

    Again - compare rates.

Now that you have pinpointed what "ad" (email) works best - and offer, you're ready to up the amount of recipients.

    *EDIT*
I once had a extremely targeted email group, previous buyers as well, very much like yours. The CTR (to website) was at 30%, and conversion rate at 8%. If your list is anything like the quality I had, you should expect similar figures.

    Meaning:
30% of 2.5m will open the website (750.000 users)
8% of these will convert (60.000 sales)

So, please, think before you do anything you'll regret.

This is, without a doubt, the best advice I have received. Thank you. Anything else I should try or look out for?

Planning is key here. If you in fact sit on 2.500.000 non-spammed previous
online-shoppers (that you know age range, majority gender, country and especially interest of) - do not look to make $100 fast.

What I did for the wine-industry, maybe it could give you some ideas.
I got ahold of a semi-big (130k) email list, that signed up for newsletter from a website selling wine.
I started reverse engineer the buyer. Where is his/her location? Most popular gender? Average order value (cheap wine vs expensive). Casual shoppers or frequent?

After some time, I had the following data:
    User (gender, location, age, interest)
Timing (days of week to shop (if it's mainly for big events, or once every wednesday for the weekend))
Product (what type of wine, pricing)

Set up a very very basic lander, then did the split testing I mentioned above. About $4000 order value per sendout, once a week every thursday morning.

As I started this post; planning is key.

    Thanks again. Couple questions:

    1. How did you find the following?:
    User (gender, location, age, interest)
Timing (days of week to shop (if it's mainly for big events, or once every wednesday for the weekend))
Product (what type of wine, pricing)

    2. Was 4k the gross sales, or profit? What was your margin?

    3. How long did that last? Did you continue for weeks on end, or did it eventually die out? Did you sell the audience something else? What became of everything?

As I understood you had some insight of the business before it went down? Write down every little detail you can think of, then find patterns for the user.
What was the busiest days of shipping? That's probably when most ordered.
Was it mainly male or females?
Try to figure out what age that was best converting.
Interest, as in do the customers possibly share a common interest?
    etc etc.

Use all this data to form your approach. Say your list of for previous travellers, right. You know most are men, and the average conversion value was high (so most likely buying more than 1 ticket -> most likely goes on trips with family).

Now, research on what times people book vacations the most. You want to blast during these times (but remember; build up your tests with low counts first).
Form the offer/ad/email according to the data you have.

Title: "David! Incredible offers for family trips this week (US citizens only)!"
Description: "Currently 25% off when booking for 2-4 people. etc"

If you have the name of the customer, all the better. Or you could hire some developer to extract name from email (of those like [email protected])
You know the customer buys family trips. You know the location (US in this case - makes him feel "special").

And just keep optimizing. If age-range is 15-20, you would probably title it like "Holy shit! Amazing offers, you won't believe this!" whereas elderly people would respond better to a more honest and direct response.

    Good luck

Appreciate it! When you bought this list, you knew all that info already? Or did you use a tool to extract it? Just curious about that piece.
