Make a sample site, and show them how you can dominate google with that site. Good idea?

Make a fancy website with lots of flying and whizzing graphics that tell them how much better SEO optimized websites do then regular old websites. Also talk to them on the phone a lot and make sure to tell them your the best of the best..lol that should work it would probably work on me..

Tell them you can get them to #1 :D

    lol that'll surely impress them.

It's a multimillion dollar company... I think a bit more creativity is required to impress them...

You want to do the PR for google? :O xD

Hmm, there will probally be concurents who are better, make them jalous.

Or give a guarantee that if you cant increase traffic, they wont have to pay you. But thats risky...

    something like falcommoney said.

dig up tons of things from their main site with quantcast.com, spyfu.com etc. dig up facts from their competitors. compare these stats and come up with "propositions" what you would do and why based on that data.

come up with something related to their traffic and what could be improved according to their target demographics.

being proactive in a smart way i guess is supposed to be a good thing!

As a freelance SEO consultant myself, I find the best way to go is to give them real facts.

Tell them that true longstanding SEO takes a little time, people or sites that promise results in 12 hours are usually liars or spammers who care little for their company. Their is a difference between getting your video clips site ranked with scattergun SEO than a structured plan for a clients site.

Frighten them a little with talk of Google de-indexing and tell them Google has an appeals process but why do they care if one site from 50 billion wants back in and feels badly treated.

Talk to them on keyword research. Use your time now to find some back door traffic phrases for their niche. If they sell car insurance tell that targetting car insurance is futile...however Denver Car Insurance gets x searches and has x competition

Search linkwheel on here and talk as if the system is your own! ;-)

And mainly show them a structure...regular reports etc

    Just my 2 cents...

Totally agree check out their website and their competitors and do a keywork search on them both because a lot of companies get this wrong?

Then see if you can improve on the keywords that they are using, then basicaly show them how you can help them get a better google ranking don't give the game away to much just incase they don't hire you.

most offline companies do not really understand SEO, the question they always ask is not what you can do for them, they always ask: what we can get from SEO? and How long will it take to get this result. If you tell them that it takes some time, probably at least 6-12 months (which is true), in many cases, game over. :(

just get a fancy flash website.... and a PP presentation to go with it .. that would be enough.... serious!

they are offline.. they probably dont even know what SEO means! its just a status symbol for them saying that "groovy" slang that very few ppl know of!

Agreed, they won't care but the bottom line will be visitor numbers and if the guys you are competing with for the job are not using the "back doors" and just blasting away at the main keyword you'll leave them standing and probably end up ranking for the main keyword as well by default!

    Haha...that would definitely Impress them..:D

QuickNote: Don't tell them something you can't do, you'll probably get layedoff quickly and looking like a total jerk.

This is just my two cents and I dont mean to offend anyone who has suggested he goes in with a number of profitable long tail phrases.

I have worked with a huge number of major international companies, having worked in an agency and most of them ignore the longtail completely. Even if you suggest it to them, show how easy it would be too rank for, how the long tail adds up to equal/more than short tail, how you can target the long and short tail at the same time, even how their longtail ppc is converting - they dont care. :(

For many big companies they want the one or two word phrases. I think a lot of them see it more as a branding and power experience and think they'll be more influential if they're coming up for 'car insurance' even if it doesnt generate a huge amount of sales for them.

    </rant>

What I would suggest instead is tell them what their competitors are doing. If you can show them that their competitors and ranking for powerful long tail or focussing on words that theyre not or getting traffic from x, y and z, then they're interested!

True say. My IT teacher tried teaching me what SEO is when we were doing web design and when I asked her a question about what she was explaining to us and what SEO really is she had no clue what to say infront of the class because she had no clue what it really was so she got angry at me and told me to stop picking on her. :lmao:

when talking to the clueless marketing manager...pull out your laptop and show them their site ranking for a good keyword - HOW? - just open your igoogle account and self promote the required site - trust me they will not know what this is!!! Easy :)
