So I own a sports website...it's actually a website related to the NBA. There are 20 writers writing for it as of now and the revenue is solid. The writers write for free and help with other stuff, such as logos, recruiting more writers and so on. The website looks very good, its mobile version is awesome and it also has an Android application with over 100 installs. It also has a Twitter account with 550+ Followers and a Facebook page with 25k+ likes.

However...I want to take it to the "next level". Right now, I get ~8000 views daily. Sometimes it's 5000, sometimes it's 18000, but the average is ~8000 or so. I get ~400+ visits from Search engines, ~500-600 visits from many other sources, but the major source of my views is Facebook. I have a feeling that if I stopped posting articles on Facebook, I would be getting 1000 views or so, which is quite bad, of course.

Also, there are over 1600 unique articles written on the website.

Now I am wondering - what I can do to make it even bigger? Paying authors won't work, I tried it. People just get even more lazy and want to get paid for nothing. Facebook promotion might work, but I will avoid it since I use AdSense on my website and it's basically buying traffic...and still, it would be from Facebook.

I want to create a website people will visit to check the news, and I only get 200-300 daily visits from direct links.

If you have any advice for me, please post it.
    Thanks!

With that much traffic the first thing you should be doing if you aren't already is building an email list so if your search engine traffic should ever drop off you still have access to your audience.

Your traffic will increase from email marketing too as you regularly drive people back to your site when you've updated and added a new post.

Aside from that do some guest posting on relevant blogs in the niche

Get involved in busy forums that allow clickable signatures and get your writers to do the same and provide a ton of useful info and advice people will in turn click your signature.

Blog comment on high traffic forums when relevant, i.e. no just "great post - SPAM LINK HERE" stuff. But make useful comments that relate to the article and link to something on your site which compliments or opposes it.

Get involved with other social media hubs aside from your own - the big FB groups, Pinterest boards, Reddit groups etc. Wherever your target audience is.

If you want to monetize further aside from Adsense then look at affiliate programs related to NBA and promote. Could be memorabilia, gear, basketball training videos, DVDs, match tickets, basketball equipment, sports betting (hugely profitable!). Lots of opportunities.

Obvious question, but, is your site properly optimized on-page? 1600 articles and only 400 organic visits.. I tend to think it's not, or done poorly...

Probably not. Well, I don't quite get the whole SEO stuff, although I read about that a lot. I use WordPress and SEO by Yoast plugin, although I am not sure if the plugin plays a big role in the ranking.

You should invest more time into optimizing your on-page. Just titles and meta's won't cut it, Yoast helps but to some extent (I use that plugin too for my sites). You need microformats, G authorship tags, proper internal linking. Also fix all the issues you find in the GWT, that also helps alot.

Also, create a G+ page and promote it, get some traction to it, it will do wonders.

Does every author need to have Google Authorship for the best results? Also, internal linking...there is a way to do it badly?

To be honest, I am quite confused with SEO...for example if I want to target a keyword "kobe bryant dunk" which is, let's say, used a lot in the search engine, do I need to have the phrase "kobe bryant dunk" in my article in the EXACT form? I have a problem with that since many keywords I use are weird and cannot be used in the article without breaking grammar rules.

I have a G+ page for my website with a few followers, although I've never used it really. I just need to add my website's link to it and promote it to people to add it to their circles?

Thanks a lot for your help!

    Well let's see:

    1) I usually use around 2-3 authors for each site (if there is alot of content). In your case, 3 would be enough.

    2) If you wanna target "kobe bryant dunk" you should have that text in the title, description and H1 but you can use it in a user friendly form, such as "Kobe bryant dunks a Whooper! See him eat 10 burgers in 5 seconds" you get the drift. Google is smart, and with the hummingbird update it can grasp a written text quite well. Also, use LSI's in the article, you can find them by typing "~kobe bryant dunk" in the google search box, they'll appear as suggestions at the bottom of the SERPs. Use H2 tags and incorporate those phrases NATURALLY in the article.

    3) Internal linking. What I do is, every article has references to other articles on the site (the goal is to make them relevant). For example, in the "Kobe dunk" article I could link the "Kobe crashes car" article or "Kobe spit by fan". I track the traffic on all articles and if I see some that perform badly even if the kw is solid or don't rank well I focus on linking those articles more.

    4) G+ page. Manage it as you would manage your FB page. Post daily, share it on FB, share it on Twitter, interact with your followers, advertise it on your other social media channels. Sometimes I post valuable/attractive content on the site and share that info only on G+. Then I share the post I've made on G+ on FB and Tw with a message similar to "Bla bla [insert title of the article/post here]. Check it out on MYSITE.TLD G+" -> easy exposure and traction.

I hate G+ but Google really wants it popular and "rewards" you for using it so we have to dance to their music sadly...

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions PM me. I'm not that active on BHW lately (too much work).

How about some posting (legit no spams) on NBA Forums?
Improving your PR might be helpful aswell. NBA is a famous sport, there should be a huge potential.

If you've got the right type of site try getting into google news.
