Alright, here's the situation. I'm helping my mom build her site for her consulting business. She currently has a free site hosted under MSN Live.

I'm guessing that some free sites would get better indexing and page rank than others, (she IS hosting under microsoft right now, as I said...) but I'm thinking it would be better for her to host her own Wordpress site (in overall terms), especially where it concerns SEO.

So here's what I'd like to know...

1.)Will the search engines give more weight to her site/pages it she hosts it herself?

2.)What are the advantages, if any, for linkbuilding (backlinks, internal linking etc.) on a self-hosted site as opposed to the free site?

3.)What might be the differences in indexing, etc?

4.)If she were to decide to switch over to Wordpress would there be much difficulty in transferring her content? What I mean is, is it likely I'd be able to take her content (I'm not concerned about the templates...) in an HTML format and get it onto Worpress?

I'm still a bit wet behind the ears in all of this stuff.

Also, I was wondering what are the best ways to go about securing my own website? Do I need to set up SSL's and all that good stuff?

    Thanks in advance

I'll have a go at answering your questions

i think IMHO, that worrying about pagerank / indexing for a startup
consulting site is a bit like putting the cart before the horse.

Get your Mom her own cheap hosting and a proper .COM domain name
and get it sorted out with a reputable hosting service. Do not use the registrar and hosting account from the same supplier. FYI I personally use Godaddy for domain purchase and Hostgator for hosting for all my WH work. For BH work, i user internet.bs for domain purchase, (they are in the Bahamas and don't blab) and I use my own servers for hosting.

I believe so. But of far more importance to your Mom and her consulting business is that the branding looks good. So ...... momsconsulting.com is always better than momsconsulting.msn.com or xxxxxxx.wordpress.com

Can't think of any except why give all the linkjuice to another site?
Again -- my overall comment is concentrate on branding rather than linking at this time.

See my earlier comment - I can't think of any

You can paste HTML into Wordpress posts. However, get your look and feel together first.

What precisely do you need to secure? IMHO, the only reason you would need a SSL is if you are running a shopping cart.

    Hope that helps

Better use a top level domain like a .com. It matters. Also with all SEO plugins Wordpress blogs are easy optimize.

I hadn't considered running into those types of issues. That settles it then.
I just have to do a little arm twisting first... :) But, being the local tech geek of the family I'm sure she'll defer to my recommendation.

    Thanks again for the consult!

Precisely said. you pay for the service so that they maintain their servers in the best condition and server uptime too.

those "free lunches" might be there for a day or two before going down.
