I am an IT consultant by day. I worked in IT for the past 10 years from DOD and corporate all the way to small business/homes. After my last job laid me off because of the company downsizing I want to make it on my own. I am sick of the rat race.

I started my IT consulting business over a year ago and I am finally making money on it. It took me a while but it is finally paying off. I have clients each month that I have contracts for and that nets me about 700 a month. (small business clients). I also have a successful ebay business that I usually make about 400 from each month after fees, costs, etc.

I am new to SEO but I would like to include this into my arsenal. I have a few niche sites and am creating more while trying to focus on quality.

My wife's income lets us break even after bills and rent. We want to have our second child in the near future so I need to step it up and get some more cash rolling in. I think SEO is a great addition to my already diverse income.
    Here is my question..

I have about 2 months to really get something going. After that I will need to either really focus on my IT business or go back to the grind and find a job doing system/network administration or something similar.

What do you think I should do? What can i do in the 2 months that would help me start some cash trickling in?

I would love some advice from the members from this forum. I think a lot of you have been in a similar situation and could offer me some good advice.

    Thanks in advance:batman:

I have money saved to spend on some of the things I need. Not much, but enough to be able to spend a few hundred a month on advertising or whatever. I'm not THAT worried about the money part for the next 2 months.

And I don't need to get rich in the next two months, I just have an opportunity to get something started in the next 2 months. I'm going into this thinking that my IT business will be my main thing. I would be happy if I could add a few hundred to my income with SEO a month, eventually.

You just sound like you have no idea that what you are asking for.

I do not think you have the work ethic needed to make it in IM.

While I can see where you coming from, I do find your comment a bit insulting. My work ethic is fine, I just have found that instead of wasting a lot of time it is wiser to ask people who have been there and done that. To be honest, I would have no problem comparing my curriculum vitae to others but I'm not looking for a pissing contest. I am looking to soak up as much as I can.

You may have a point, I don't really know what to ask. I am trying to get established. I am new.

Thanks for your interest in the topic though.

I'm going to break it down the same way I break it down every time this forum comes up. I agree with Virus, I'll be blunt.

You're lazy. There are thousands and thousands of posts in this forum to read, you should be reading nonstop, and stop trying to be spoonfed. You even started another thread, "Best topic you have read on BHW", because you are too lazy to go and look for the information you need.

SEO requires a lot of passion, and dedication. When someone comes here and makes TWO threads asking to be spoonfed, that tells me they have neither. You know who the successful people are? The ones that come here, and read and read and read and read, then ask questions. They can't stop reading because they want to learn so much. They dont' want to do anything else because they want to learn everything they can. They want to catch up to everyone else. Those are the ones who will succeed. Those are the ones that will do what it takes to get where they want. If these forums weren't around those people would be searching for hours on google finding the information they need... you probably would have said 'fuck it'.

Why don't you just spend more time in building what you're doing already and is profitable?

If you're only netting $700 a month from your consulting, there's a long way to go. No offence, but $700 a month is peanuts in the consulting world. I've had people pay me more than that for ONE hour. I tend to diversify once a revenue stream hits $5k a month. Spend this month just looking for new clients and see where that gets you.

Same goes for eBay - scale that up.

Once they both hit $5k a month, look for a way to diversify. IM is not suitable if you need quick cash. The quality of your CV is also irrelevant.

No offence, but you don't really seem like you have very high aspirations, which won't work in your favour if you're looking to get into IM. It's a grind, and if you don't work day and night when you start out, you're not going to cut it. If you would be "happy" with an extra few hundred a month, you might as well just do some freelancing or something. Complete waste of time learning a bunch of stuff to make an extra few hundred bucks.

    Dantech,

You will find that BHW is not a friendly place to be asking for guidance. Gotta earn your stripes like the rest of us. But here is a short guide to getting you started.

    1. Read

    2. Try something

    3. Fail

    4. Try something else

    5. Fail

    6. Fail 89,473,937,497,384 more times

    7. Then you get it right.

I'll second Virus, meathead and jon here.

You are looking for an extra stream of revenue in 2 months. You said yourself that it took a year to build something with your consulting business.

Well, you can't get something overnight in IM unless you are lucky or you found a brand new method.

I'm not trying to discourage you or something but there is tons of topic on BHW which can be useful in your offline business.

Make that business profitable and turn it into long term.

In 2 months many things can happen in a business you know well, but not much in a business you have to learn everything from

    My 2 cents
    GL anyway

As the posts above say, IM is really not for you if you expect to get something rolling by then.

In 2 months, the cash would just be that, trickling. I don't think that the endless hours you put in will be worth the $0.10 - $3.00 you will make each day using a CPC/CPA method.. Focus on your primary business and paying the bills first.

The only thing you can do here is read, read and did I mention, Read?

There are hundreds of fantastic posts on this forum. Read them all, Print them out, highlight ideas/good posts etc.
If you read the threads here and new ideas on how to improve them pop up in your head, then you will not succeed in this niche as it would have been done already.

Sorry to be a downer here.

    Thanks for everyone's posts.

    A few things.

My consulting business brings in more than 700 a month. The 700 is what I have contracts for. I do both break/fix and Managed services. I'm fine with that and it is growing.

I'm not looking to get rich quick or anything, just trying to learn, as I have sites that I make money from now and want to expand in that area and I think I have neglected the seo aspect.

I don't think it is lazy to ask questions, just smart not to waste time. I have been studying the board for the past few days and yes, I asked people what was the biggest thing they learned, best thread, etc so that someone who may want to help could give me guidance. I am not asking anyone to optimize my site for free or anything like that, I'm just trying to learn from other people's mistakes and even things that they have done right. I keep hearing that everyone fails and fails and fails. Well, if I can limit my failures then I surely would want to.

I give IT advice for free just about every day to people. If someone asked me a similar question I would answer it to the best of my ability instead of saying that they are lazy for not googling it when they could have spent 45 minutes trying to find the answer I told them in 1 minute. I think that is just the smart way to do things, not the lazy way.

I guess I could have been a little more detailed in my question and I see Cnotey is right about people not liking to give guidance. That is fine. I'm sure someone will help.

To all of the people that answered my question, thank you, even if it was not something I wanted to hear.

With all of that being said, Please do not reply to my posts to call me lazy or try to judge who I am. If you don't have anything to say that will help me just skip over my thread. In exchange I will moderate what I ask here.

In the interest of not wasting more time (which is the reason I started this topic) I will leave it at that and continue reading the forums.

    Thanks

Great starting point. I can vouch for the guys who seem like they are attacking you. They really aren't. It's just that it gets a bit tiring to see everyone in the world thinking that they will be very rich in IM in 6 months just because.....

The failure rate is high and probably someone should do a survey to find out exactly how high. I won't be surprised to see it is just as high or even higher than common brick and mortar business.

In a nutshell what guys are advicing you to do is to first make sure you can pay the bills and that's why the $700 is cropping up. Then take the time, probably the 2 months to learn as much as you can from this forum.

Then pick one method, preferably from your own research that works for you. You will find too many methods here. My experience has shown that the failure is not because of lack of methods but simply lack of implementation.

I have to say that its good to see that you are determined to succeed, but at the same time, don't get disappointed when things don't go your way. Even when guys seem to demean you.

Good luck. It's been great for me and I get where your coming from.

I too agree with meathead and virus.

It is a grind. Still a few pointers that might help you-

    SEO-long time
CPA/PPC/YT- medium learning but quick income once fluent. Go to the specific Sub forum and sort by views and replies and read/print some you think are best.

Another is arbitage. Article arbitage..you have to spend some time training outsourcers or getting hang of softwares. Sell on fiverr or DP or WF. (This might fit in 2 months)
Read content cash cow for this system.

And yes you need to read...i m here for almost 5 months and yet i m still a superior noob...( getting to begginer phase) :D

    Best of luck
    Neo

What if I came up to you at your desk, you had a book "What is IT and how to start our own IT business" on your desk, and instead of reading it, I ask you "What is IT and what should I do to start my own business?" How would you react? And to take it a step further, what if someone came and asked you every day the same question, even if you put a bit sign that says "I answered your question in this free book, read it." But people still keep asking you the question?
