    what a waste of time

I had some guy who was interested in having a website built. we agreed at $500 and I sent him a contract.
in our meeting, he said he would be sending me the signed contract and check within 2 days. meanwhile, he wanted me to create facebook and linked in. He also had me set up his domain and hosting, and I created mailboxes for a bunch of people in their firm (info@firm.com, john@firm.com, etc). I did not mention any price for this, but I thought I would work for free to impress them or I thought maybe they would pay me a tip on top of the $500. any decent human being would.

well, it's been a week and I have not received signed agreement or the check. they are also not answering my text messages.

what a waste of time. what could I have done to prevent this?
    what about revenge?

maybe get the contract signed in the meeting and get the payment upfront?

I'm no expert but that is how I would do it.

    You right.

Always get some money upfront...at least $100 to pay for the trip and meeting time.

Don't send them a text...pick up the phone and ask them what's going on. Also send him an invoice for work performed and request payment.

Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paypal.here&hl=en to your Smartphone and charge them on the spot. I guess the fact is they thought like they might get ripped off by you and never replied back.

Your client is an idiot. He is not paying and yet you have him by the balls.

Threaten to take everything down unless he pays up. If he still doesn't pay up, tell him you will use the domain name to publish the story of this non-paying client. The negative PR for him will make him cough up.
