    Hi guys,
some of you may have noticed it - I have opened quite a lot of threads in the past couple of weeks. Reason for this is I am highly motivated and I have so many questions about so many things. Even though I'm very motivated I haven't taken action, yet. And this bugs me. The reason for not taking action is quite simple, but unneccessary to mention. I am here, because I told myself I'll open one last thread about a method I thought of and if it isn't a complete disaster I won't open another one, I won't post or visit this forum again, unless I have taken action.

So, here's my idea and I'd like you guys to tell me whether or not this is a good idea.

I'm going to create a couple of small review blogs for products. The quality of the reviews is going to be exceptionally good and will be written in my language (I'm quite skilled writing in my own language). Instead of targetting broad and very popular niches I will only target small niches (1k-3k exact searches/month) to avoid heavy competition, because I'm no pro at SEO. My products are still going to be popular within this niche.

The KWs and products I'll target will be researched using AdWords KW Planer. If my KWs have 1-3k exact searches and a medium/high competition I will take the next step and check my competition. I was going to do that by using SEOquake and simply check the PRs and age of the Top 10 domains showing up for my exact KW search.

    Questions:

    1. This idea is pretty basic, but am I already missing something or is the way I was going to approach this flawed?
    2. Competition: What exactly would you consider a weak/medium/high competition? I have an example for one of my KWs: (PRs in Top10: n/a, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 1, n/a, 0, 0) I'd consider this a weak competition. Am I guessing correctly?
    3. Competition: Sometimes when checking the competition there are forum posts of a very popular and well known forum ranking for #1, or #2 and SEOquake tells me its PR is 4-6. When competing against other websites, is it the PR of their main website (e.g. www.popularforum.com) that is shown or is it the PR of the exact forum post (e.g. popularforum.com/recipes/cake/delicious_cake_recipe.html)? Or in other words, if a forum post from an aged and very popular forum is ranking #1, or #2, is it possible to outrank them? When ranking for my KW am I competing against the forum post or the forum itself? And if so, how hard/easy is it to outrank those?
    4. Competition: Same questions as 3., but for YT videos. Found a niche with a YT video ranking on #3 and one on #7. Both have less than 20k views, but the shown PRs are 3 and 4. Easy to outrank, or quite hard?
    5. SEO: Are there any basic SEO steps I should consider taking in order to rank my websites? I am looking for a plan or sort of a method that I can repeat for every single website and is a guarantee for #1 for weak/weak-medium competition. If there's a service sold, or a SEO 101 thread I'd take that as an answer. Unfortunately I haven't found a thread like this and since I'm a complete SEO noob I don't know which services are worth their money and compatible with my method

I really hope for some good answers, since I finally want to get started on my journey.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks guys.

Just take action. All plans, ideas and theories are pointless and useless without applying them into application.

Dude.. I will, don't worry. I have a few KWs ready to go, but since I'm on an incredibly tight budget and don't have that much free time right now, I'll have to limit myself to 1 project for now. Once I have more time I'll launch more websites.
And since I don't have that much free time I don't want to spend the time I have on the 'wrong' KW to begin with.
Also, lots of my questions aren't preparing related questions, but important aspects for once the journey has started (SEO, etc)

Don't measure competition only by PR, you need full details of the top 10, try Market samurai, or just go directly to Majestic SEO and Opensiteexplorer and analyze all top 10, might as well just answered your 1, 2,3 and 4 question. Youtube videos, (and guessing forum posts) and easier to rank but are just like any other website, it all depends on ALL the ranking factors not just PR.
    And for question number 5:
    - try building a Private blog network, I found this tutorial to be my favorite.
    - get niche related guest posts.

    Good Luck!

Add your site on web2rule and start getting social signals. Google plus ones hold a lot of weight.

something I have learned from IM is that nothing is going as planned.
everything is always moving and changing so start doing instead of planning

Guys..please.. I get it. Thank you for your advice, but I sometimes get the feeling there's only black and white in this forum. I get that some people actually do overthink stuff. Hell, I might be one of them, don't know. But sometimes you guys do the very same thing only in the complete opposite way - you oversimplify.

There's always this image that comes into my mind when I'm in one of those situations. I think of this guy who doesn't know the first thing about baseball, he really doesn't have any clue about it. Baseball being IM in this example. Then there's the experienced players sitting on the bench. The noob walks up to them and asks them how to play baseball. And then the guys who oversimplify stuff start yelling at him: "OMG JUST TAKE ACTION! JUST PLAY THE GAME DUDE! JUST LEARN BY DOING! IT'S NOT THAT HARD!...etc."
But how is he supposed to start playing if he doesn't even know the rules, or that he has to take a bat and hit the ball with it, etc. You get the picture.
Now of course you always learn best by simply trying, failing and trying it again. But there's no harm in equipping someone with the very basic knowledge, like how to play the game and the basic rules. I think you get what I'm trying to say.
    Just my 2c.

    Ok, back to topic:

Great, thanks. That was really helpful.
Unfortunately MarketSamuria seems to be of very low value for my country/language and its market. I don't really know why, I just googled it and it has been mentioned quite a lot. Since I don't know how MarketSamurai works, I don't know how serious I should take these statements.
I guess you use MS quite a lot, right? Is there any reason why this tool shouldn't work for different languages, countries and markets?

If your answer was yes, do you know any other method to check my competition? Is SEOmajestic country independant?

    Thanks.

Germany. Thought I've already mentioned that, but seems like I forgot.

Actually I just downloaded MS and I'm currently using the 40 day trial period. I just played around with it for the last couple of hours, but I already love it.

    Unbenannt.jpg

This is the chart for one of my KWs. It has ~1000-2000 exact searches/month.
Website #2 is a BIG testing company. They're probably #1 product testing company in my country. They test EVERYTHING.

#3 and #4 is the same website, but 2 different articles. The site itself looks quite cheap and only has a few articles.

#9 is a 'best price search engine'. You know, you type in a product and they tell you the best price for it and where to get it.

So this is an example chart. Would you consider this niche to possibly be profitable? See, I don't know about those huge sites. The main website itself is probably almost impossible to outrank, but these particulare article sites don't look too strong, apart from the domain age of course.

I'd appreciate your help to analyzing this so I can learn what parameters are important and which aren't.

Looks like pretty low competition to me. All those green boxes = good.

I personally use Long Tail Pro which uses its own formula (a combination of all the metrics you see in MS). It give a nice competition score out of 100, of which I target 35/100 and below.

The most important thing is conversion rate, forget about exact searches per day, etc... focus on conversion rate! It is better to rank for a keyword with 50 searches per day that will convert 10 sales, than to rank for a keyword with 1000 searches per day but won't sell.

Do you have any data on the product/niche conversion rate? Is it a product that Germans buy online?

That's kind of what I thought. But still, I don't know how to evaluate a chart like this? I see the boxes are green and I know what they mean, but I don't know how important the score is. See, there's a website with an age of 14 years, the rest of its stats looks quite ok. Now my problem is I don't know if the domain age is that important that it outweighs all the other parameters. Do you know where I can find stuff like that out?
Because I actually do have a 2nd KW where the chart is even harder to interpret for me.

    See:
    2.jpg

The PRs are almost as bad as in my example above, but the domain ages are crazy. Mostly because these are all big online shops (amazon, ebay, big sportswear store, etc), but none of these are review sites.
So I'll ask again - how hard is it to outrank websites like these? They do have some stats worth mentioning, but if you follow the links you'll only get to the product description of the item and where you can buy it.

It's a pretty common sports device like a golf club, or a tennis racket. It's something you need for a particular sport. I assumed it'd convert quite ok, because the CPC is quite high, too and I've seen a lot of ads.
But this is something that'll be part of my learning curve - to find out what converts well and what doesn't. Right now I'm trying to focus on the technical basics.

OP, judging from you MS screenshots, you have a pretty decent keywords, as you can see, for keyword 2, none of the ranking "pages" (not websites) have backlinks pointing to them, and none of them are targeting the keyword, you can see in the last few columns that all of them are green and market as N (No) which means keyword has not been mentioned at all, all of the pages are ranking by the main DA and PR, with some good work and quality content, you can rank number #1.
For the first keyword, I can see some pages having backlinks pointing to them, but are not optimized for that specific keyword (title, URL, Description), so this isn't something to worry a lot about, like I said, PR isn't more important than any other factor.

    Hope I helped.

    What's that supposed to mean?
Taking a wild guess for my KWs? :D

    EDIT:
Holy sh... This MarketSamurai software is incredible. I'm speechless. Can you even be successful without a tool like that? Unbelievable.
A few of my KWs I thought were good are actually complete crap. And the KW research tool.. oh lord. I've got to start from scratch. But this is going to be good. Thanks so much.
